6'2" Swedish RD committed to Kamloops of the WHL next year. It seems odd that a player ranked 42nd by Button, 44th by CS, and 42nd by HockeyProspect has absolutely no talk about him.

From what I can tell, Persson's vision and skating are the strongest areas of his game.

Can anyone tell me anything about his game? @VictorLustig?

Haven't seen him that much lately actually. Saw him when Victor Söderström played in J20 and was pretty impressed then. He's gone under the radar due to not playing on the national teams.

Here's a discussion on him from people who have seen him more than me. Starts 23:45 minutes in.

So most of the Canucks picks today were projected to go MUCH earlier in the draft. Does this mean we did a good job or we got a bunch of draft fallers and Benning missed the memo on why they dropped?

He is also a +12, he may actually end up with a higher chance of developing into a pro player than we thought.

Him coming to Kamloops for WHL season is going to be grea in terms of tracking his development and progress. That is going to be a very very stacked Kamloops team

I had him ranked a lot higher than 191st. Not surprised to see him doing well, and I think Kamloops is a great place for him to develop.

Why did this guy fall so far?

And why the hell did Detroit draft Donovan Sebrango over him? :help:

wild bet: Persson develops at a better pace than canucks third rounder, Joni Jurmo.

They're both of the same ilk, good skating offensive defenceman with size.

I wonder if we’ll actually end up seeing him in Kamloops. This season still seems difficult for imports, even if it does start in January. Next year Kamloops would have to use an import + OA spot for him without him having played for the team before. Plus, the Canucks might want him in Utica by then. Would definitely be great to see him in Kamloops, though, and I’m sure the fact he’s planning to go there is a big reason why the Canucks picked him.

Agreed on this. After speaking to some Finns, Jurmo doesn’t seem to have the highest hockey IQ. I think Persson is the highest upside pick in this draft for the Canucks.

Benning did very well in this years draft. Not having a 1st or 2nd obviously hurt, but I think we got 3 very good prospects with NHL potential.
-Persson is a 6'2 RHD how is an excellent skater. Making Sweden's WJC team is a very good sign. Developing in Kamloops next year could be massive.
- Jurmo is a huge frame that can skate very well. I thought he'd be off the board at the start of the 2nd round.
-Zlodeyev is going to make a push to make Russia's WJC team. He is a very good 2 way centre.

Jurmo was 3rd rounder, Zlodeyev 6th, Persson 7th. I expect that in a few years time these guys are all very high in re drafts.

jurmo didn’t even make Finland’s wjc preliminary list which is very bad as there are non drafted Finnish dmans even made it...

I think the fact that Persson was not seeing any time with the national teams was a big part of his fall in the draft - its hard to pick a player against conventional wisdom in a lot of cases. However, he's a player who seems to have all the elements to be a very good pro.

I guess we better write him off as a prospect then.

If he had a complete and ready game with his skillset he would have been a first rounder. He is raw and needs time, but getting a huge D that can skate and is a fitness freak in the 3rd round is a good find.

If anything, the Persson pick is making me think the Detroit Red Wings need to poach Vancouver's Swedish scouts. It always seems like the Canucks are finding more gems in Scandinavia than we are.

Canucks swedish scouts are insane, Seriously they need to draft 80% Swedes every year

I think it’s also that he showed some issues in his game that need to be fixed, plus he doesn’t have any real standout skills. He can absolutely turn into a very good pro, but it’ll be a development project. He won’t just suddenly burst onto the scene and be an NHL player.

I think former Canuck stalwart Tomas Gradin gets a lot of credit for the team's drafting of Swedish players in all rounds. Another kid to watch is Arvid Costmar, who's already playing some games in the SHL and is a favorite to make this year's Team Sweden WJHC team....and drafted even later than Persson in 7th round.

He and Hakan Andersson seem to shadow each other over in Sweden. The Wings almost drafted Alex Edler but Gradin was so sold on him that Vancouver traded up to draft him. Detroit ended up with Johan Franzen instead.

Crazy that Costmar was the third to last pick in the 2019 draft and is now in the SHL as a 19YO and potentially on Swedens WJC squad. Getting two 7th rounders into the WJC would be a pretty big win for our scouts.
