Mind if I scour your grey matter a little? Would you care to elaborate as to why you seem reluctant at the idea?

He's been a buy low option in my hockey pools that I liked in the last couple of years, mostly for the blocked shots and hits, but he had 50 point and 49pts season. He's has a bad year but we know he played through a broken fibula which affected his skating.

A 6 feet 1 28 year old Swedish defensemen, he wasn't their PP guy, I think he has 19 PP in his career so, he's likely a guy who is a top 4RD who could play higher in our lineup and insulate the young guys until he drops to his rightful place when our youth is ready. I also like the idea of trading Matheson + for him as that makes sense for the Flames. Should they want Mailloux + instead its also feasible.

I mean, out of our available options, I would be more enthused to acquire him than Perbix whom I recall you mentioned as a potential stopgap.

Ekblad and Dobson seems like a pipedream, 1 would need to be willing to sign here as a UFA and warrants big money. The other warrants just the same big payday but we would have the give the moon to acquire on top.

It seems a plausible and opportunistic acquisition on a proper timeline. If the only risk is he doesn't resign after his contract is over, I'd wager we don't even ponder the trade unless he's open to an extention right away...

There's a few things (im a big fan of getting Andersson at the right cost). Obviously the first thing being there's no extension in place. Now that can be conditional on the trade so I'll not go too far down that road.

But Andersson did suffer a major leg injury this season and his skating has been noticeably declining last few years. So there is a risk that the skating goes caput and the mobility being gone would significantly impact his value output.

Lastly, his defensive performance and metrics this year on a team that got high level goaltending was not exactly the best. So its not like we are paying for an elite defenseman here so the price has to align.

I voted other for now, but I'm ready to change my mind to Dobson.

Problem with him, in my opinion, is that if you're willing to trade prime assets and sign him long-term for $11M, he better be the type of player that can lead your blueline deep into the playoffs.

If he's truly an elite, all-situations defenseman, go and get him.

Share the concerns... Cost of acquisition + long term commitment at a big market premium = better be 100% sure he's more a Doughty than a Hamilton.

No need to trade for a RHD

Hutson-Guhle
Matheson-Carrier
Wifi-Reinbacher
Struble-Mailloux

Reinbacher will probably take Carrier's spot 20 games in the season

I’m the same place. He sounds great in theory but if for some reason he’s not, you end up with a boat anchor on your team.

This team needs a Zdeno Chara or Chris Pronger type dmen, even if it’s a lite version, to play with Hutson.

I'm guessing a lot depends on Reinbacher & Mailloux's readiness.
No need to pay to bring in an RD if those guys are ready.
However, if HuGo believe they need more time in Laval, then any addition to our blueline means Xhekaj or Struble will be riding the pine until an injury occurs.

His skating has not declined whatsoever over tha past 3 seasons and is still well above average for an NHL dman. I am not sure why you are making this claim as it immediately sounded off to me.

Here is the evidence:

His numbers actually showed a slight uptick over the previous two seasons.

That absolutely will not happen.

Carrier was very good for us last season and in the absence of a trade will be our top RHD next season. You are severely underestimating the gap between a proven vet like Carrier and a 20 year old rookie.

Reinbacher absolutely should supplant Carrier in the near future but that is extremely unlikely to happen this season let alone after the first 20 games.

It is unrealistic expectations like this that feed the negative hyperbolic narrative that often creeps up way too early on prospects who are still early in their NHL development and can't possibly be anything but a negative factor albeit slight but negative nonetheless.

The next two or 3 seasons will see ups and downs in his development as is the case for virtually all top D prospects in their first foray into the NHL. This will cause bipolar behaviour around here. So please, let's keep our expectations reasonable and not set the bar so high as to trigger the zombie horde when it is not met.
