I think plan A will be checking the price on the BPAs available via trade (cost control) who are known commodities and will be a safer bet. On the other hand, I could see Hughes getting another solid Dman a la Carrier that gets a bigger role in Montreal and excels at it. Maybe they will acquire a strong defensive RD that pairs well with Hutson, but costs way less.

I've always felt because 6 Dmen are dressed (usually) for games, and the nature of pairings and of the position, just one addition or subtraction can completely change how D pairings looks on paper and the ice.

I can see hughes finding a piece that makes the overall team better, but isn't a star or a big name. I think the sexier addition will be at Centre.

Draft a few more gems and bring back Dvorak on a value contract for one season. Give Dach his last chance in his contract season to prove his worth.

Seems unattractive but probably the best more if the trades don't play out. There are going to be players who become available during the next season. Always happens.

If a bottom team like Ana or Chi who has tons of cap misses out on a guy like Marner, if they will even bid on him, then Laine could be an option. Scores PP goals with only 1 year left. That would open up money for Gavrikov even though i doubt he’d sign here. He can play the right side. He’d be my #1 on the wish list and wouldn’t cost us assets

Mind if I scour your grey matter a little? Would you care to elaborate as to why you seem reluctant at the idea?

He's been a buy low option in my hockey pools that I liked in the last couple of years, mostly for the blocked shots and hits, but he had 50 point and 49pts season. He's has a bad year but we know he played through a broken fibula which affected his skating.

A 6 feet 1 28 year old Swedish defensemen, he wasn't their PP guy, I think he has 19 PP in his career so, he's likely a guy who is a top 4RD who could play higher in our lineup and insulate the young guys until he drops to his rightful place when our youth is ready. I also like the idea of trading Matheson + for him as that makes sense for the Flames. Should they want Mailloux + instead its also feasible.

I mean, out of our available options, I would be more enthused to acquire him than Perbix whom I recall you mentioned as a potential stopgap.

Ekblad and Dobson seems like a pipedream, 1 would need to be willing to sign here as a UFA and warrants big money. The other warrants just the same big payday but we would have the give the moon to acquire on top.

It seems a plausible and opportunistic acquisition on a proper timeline. If the only risk is he doesn't resign after his contract is over, I'd wager we don't even ponder the trade unless he's open to an extention right away...
