After the way that Winnipeg game finished, Nemec was never going to play this one regardless of who was going to be in the lineup in his place. You simply couldn't play him after that mess.

Especially when a lot of this stuff is about his compete and effort level.
Are the Devils even going to make the playoffs? Rangers are 4 points out with a game in hand.

I would have thought of them as sellers seeing how they are playing for the last months... It's even worst since Hughes is out.

Nemec could still have brought nice pieces. There is always someone to gamble on a recent top 5 pick.

I don't think they will.

I'm a little surprised that they didn't send Nemec out at the deadline when they knew the Kovacevic deal was getting done because we already know how unhappy he is in the AHL and if they try to put him there again next year, I don't think it's going to go great. So I do expect him to be gone in the off season. As maligned as Dougie is by a portion of the fanbase right now, I don't know how the expectation would be to ship him out and replace him with Nemec.

I actually thought he was going to get moved for someone like Middlestadt

Devils have one of the easiest schedules left, Sorry you're team didn't have the pieces to get him.🤷‍♂️

The heck are you on about? the Habs have multiple 3rd Rounders available this draft... ;)

It's funny you told us Kovacevic was garbage before you got him whilst we told you he was decent. Then once you got him you realized we were right. You also used to tell us Nemec was terrific... Maybe you guys just suck at talent evaluation.

LMAO

You guys were happy you were getting a 4th for him and were constantly saying how he wasn't that good. He had a great start and a great year and every month it was you guys either complaining that you gave him up cause the guy's you thought were stud prospects sucked or you kept on hoping for a "see told you he sucked" moment that never came.

You may live in a bubble but when you step outside you are faced with reality and that making up bullshit up doesn't work.

Nemec was only moving this trade deadline in a deal for an established forward.

No playoff team (buyer) is looking for a 21 year old D to help with their cup chase.

Since the Devils didn’t really buy, there wasn’t a reason to move Nemec. Particularly with Hamilton out for a while. Nemec will get an opportunity now - it’s up to him to take advantage of it.

So what you're saying is don't draft Slovaks? ;)
I have discussed the Slovak problem at great length on these boards before.

For some reason, I did not get a lot of supporters a few years ago, but this is exactly what I predicted.

You see, the Slovak junior national teams are in that sweet spot of sometimes making deeper play-off runs, which makes their leading prospects overexposed and overrated.

This has happened multiple times before. When you play a late 2nd round prospect on the top line and on PP1 for Slovakia, he's going to score way more points than, say, a Canadian buried on the 3rd line with PK duty.

And those half a dozen WJC / U18s games are ridiculously overweighed in whatever assessments the scouts are making. It's blatantly obvious, yet so many teams fall for that trap every time.

If you'd play set plays on a Canadian 4th liner the entire tournament wearing a Slovakia jersey, he'd get drafted 30 spots higher.

LOL Anywho the reason why most Habs fans thought that unloading upcoming free agent Kovacevic was fine was because we had Mailloux and Reinbacher coming in. Then we discovered the former wasn't ready and then the latter got injured.

And has he? The best time to sell was the moment you discovered that Kovacevic could handle the load. The next was when you found out that Seamus Casey wasn't some mirage. You guys need to make a hockey trade asap. Every day forward Nemec is losing value.

And the Devils are pitching a shutout.

Which goes to prove that NJD may very well be a better team WITHOUT Nemec.

Yup.

Yes.. the game is like this entirely because of no Nemec. :shakehead

I think Basketball is more your game.

Don't think that any Devils fan should take people who thought Baron, Mailoux were studs and have their own Defenseman to worry about in reinbacher seriously

I agree with you. But, somehow you and I together haven’t convinced Fitz. :(

Edit: in fairness, it’s still not clear what Kovacevic will be. He’s clearly an NHL defenseman, but is he top pair? Meanwhile, Nemec is still young. It’s possible continues to develop.

It's okay hermano, I feel ya. However if you had the choice between missing the playoffs and holding on to your hopes and dreams for Nemec's future OR making the playoffs and admitting that Nemec is a bust which would you pick?

I understand especially since us Habs fans expected to miss these playoffs whereas you guys were basically in and now possibly losing your spot to your dreaded rivals the NYR.

I think the extension of Kovacevic was a clear sign that the NJD have no plans for Nemec because he is a bust. They tried to play him to recapture value but it backfired. Will be interesting to see what they salvage from trade in the offseason.

Nemec has pedigree. So the Devils should be able to get a high second round pick From a bottom 10 club. Or they could move him in a sideways move for an equally struggling prospect.

He's not a bust, he could still become a top 4 guy. But he was very obviously overdrafted.

Added that last part ehhh? Sneaky devil. Anywho the fact is the Habs have enough D prospects that we're cool losing some to the vagaries of fate. The only problem being when it often happens on the Right side. Additionally Reinbacher is now back and getting in his reps in the AHL and looking spectacular.

Sure Barron and Mailloux may have been some of our top RD prospects for a while there but now it's Reinbacher and Konyushkov.

Another sneakily editing Devil. Anywho I don't believe in pairing classes. When the Habs last made the Finals we had Chiarot, a bottom pairing guy, with Shea Weber and the pairing worked. Shea was the #1 guy and we found the best partner for him. Who knows maybe a Hughes - Kovacevic pair may one day work out best.

Why do my fellow Habs fans feel a need to come here, act like idiots and claim that someone who's having a setback in his sophomore year a bust.

Chances are that you will look like morons in hindsight.

Just let it play out without running your mouths. Chill guys.

funny to read this, on one hand you have a journeyman D who maybe found his stride at 27 in a contract year after being a waiver claim and 7th D sitting in the press box and on the other you have a 21 year old who’s hit some speed bumps in his development and possibly sulking a bit is a bust. Great to see Kovy doing well, was a likable player in Montreal but by your logic he busted a half dozen years ago.

One guy was selected 74OA. The other guy was picked 2OA. Hugely different expectations with these two players. The 37 year old journeyman playing ahead of the 2OA is actually an indictment of the younger player’s poor play.

People acting like you can't express valid concerns over high picks after 3 years: are you new at this? There are red flags that top picks usually aren't showing by this time. Is he a confirmed bust? No, but you don't like seeing a player at this stage of his career regressing. Hopefully he goes somewhere else and gets back on track.
