That was probably one of the worst 3rd periods a Dman can possibly have. I have never seen a worse 3 x shifts ever. Nemec is not an NHL player and i don't think he will ever become one. He has no on-ice awareness, zero hockey IQ, is soft and is lazy.Nemec was horrible tonight.
Nemec was horrible tonight.
Mateychuk over Nemec right now is a no brainier. Especially if you have Casey or Bichsel as wellLuneau was catastrophic in NHL. Mateychuk, an offensive-oriented defender, does nothing with Columbus. Left side, less defensive than Nemec, absolutely no for me.
The others, no, no debate.
Cam Barker was 3OA who was a D selection that was bad. Is there another top 3 D pick as bad as Nemec is looking? That was probably one of the worst 3rd periods a Dman can possibly have. I don't know what the NJD were thinking drafting him 2OA. At the time of the draft, Shane Wright was the obvious pick.

That’s a good comparison.Cam Barker was 3OA who was a D selection that was bad. Is there another top 3 D pick as bad as Nemec is looking?
Maybe Keefe was sending a message to management showing just how bad Nemec is (on a game he knew was lost) and that the player needs to be sent down? Might be some behind the scenes loud discussions about the player between Keefe and management. That’s a good comparison.
Nemec is unplayable. I am not sure what Keefe was thinking in the 3rd. He kept putting Nemec out there to get embarrassed. Its like he had it out for him.
Not sure if there is a GM in the league that would give up anything of value in trade after witnessing that debacle and the last year plus of Nemec floundering about.
Nemec is a more committed defensive player. And since his offensive potential is also very good, he is above Mateychuk for me.Mateychuk over Nemec right now is a no brainier. Especially if you have Casey or Bichsel as well
Hutson's dominance extends far beyond the power play. Hutson in Columbus instead of Mateychuk, Columbus is stronger and Hutson would have as many points. His teammates more.Who is Columbus going to use on the power play, Werenski or Mateychuk? If Hutson was on the Jackets, he would get 30 seconds on the 2nd power play unit and he would not be breaking records.
And Mateychuk is getting 18-20 minutes a night with zero power play time, he is a trusted defenseman already. He's going to be great.
He’s actually 21. That’s still young for a player (especially D). But the sample size is large with him and it’s not looking good.I will admit I have not watched Simon Nemec yesterday and the last few times I have seen him play he looked lost, but looking lost as a 20 year old dman is not unusual and I’d even say it’s the norm.
Hockey fans collectively we tend to give too much value to the most recent sample. Development is not linear. I prefer to look at a larger sample; he was good at the international level as a 18 year old, he looked good in his rookie season as a 19 year old, and he had a setback as a 20 year old — but his talent didnt vanish, he was coming along in the AHL before his call up. It’s just another exemple of a young guy struggling to find his place in the NHL, as an in-betweener. I’m confident he can bounce back. I’m reading some of these posts here and I’m reminded of Habs fans losing patience in Slafkovsky.
The whole team was horrible, sure his giveaway really sucked.Nemec was horrible tonight.
Chara, Lidstrom and Zubov were no better at U21. And the list is extremely long. He’s actually 21. That’s still young for a player (especially D). But the sample size is large with him and it’s not looking good.
Unless it’s a sure thing star, it’s hard to predict what a D will become when they are drafted. Lots of high picks bust while lots of lower picks shine. For every Nemec there’s a Hutson. It’s just how it goes.,
He was directly responsible for 3 goals against in a 6 minute span. The first was a gaffe. The other 2 was more par for the course. He lacks awareness - completely lost. The whole team was horrible, sure his giveaway really sucked.
There is zero chance Nemec turns into the level of player you’re suggesting. It’s far more likely he ends not being an NHLer than being one of those guys. Those are rare players.Chara, Lidstrom and Zubov were no better at U21. And the list is extremely long.
He is a young Dman who has zero confidence right now and like I said it's not like he was the only one last night. He was directly responsible for 3 goals against in a 6 minute span. The first was a gaffe. The other 2 was more par for the course. He lacks awareness - completely lost.
Nemec right now is ECHL level. Why the Devils are playing him above Casey is beyond me…
Evan Bouchard does the same thing every game and it won't stop him from getting 8 million plus on his next contract. He was directly responsible for 3 goals against in a 6 minute span. The first was a gaffe. The other 2 was more par for the course. He lacks awareness - completely lost.

Draft deal? Get a second and move on? Or trade for another stalled prospect?Been a nightmare season for him. The Devils extending Kovacevic might signal they don't consider Nemec part of their long term plans anymore and will look to move him in the offseason to improve their forwards.
There was also zero chance Chara, Lidstrom and Zubov would reach the level they did if you took the picture at U21.There is zero chance Nemec turns into the level of player you’re suggesting. It’s far more likely he ends not being an NHLer than being one of those guys. Those are rare players.
He’s not a rookie anymore…There was also zero chance Chara, Lidstrom and Zubov would reach the level they did if you took the picture at U21.
Beyond that, I was talking about Nemec as a solid all-around top 4.
The guy is an NHL rookie. Against Winnipeg, even at -3, there were very encouraging signs in his defensive commitment.
No they likely wouldn't trade him unless it was for roster pieces with term to address the forwards. So either Nemec for draft capital then move the draft capital, or Nemec for roster players.Draft deal? Get a second and move on? Or trade for another stalled prospect?
