Defenceman Mattias Havelid was a dynamic scorer for the Swedish National Junior Teams this year. He started his draft year by helping the Swedish team win a bronze medal at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. In five games he scored two goals and seven assists for nine points. That led the tournament in assists. To cap the season, he was even better at the IIHF Under-18 World Championships. Havelid scored four goals and eight assists for 12 points in six games. He led all defencemen in the tournament in goals, assists and points. Havelid helped Sweden to the gold medal and was named a top-three player on his team. He was also named to the Swedish team for the World Juniors but didn’t play any games before the tournament was cancelled/postponed.

God what a good pick. Great agility, a good shot. A little undersized but can definitely be useful for an NHL team on a second pairing and powerplay. He creates shooting lanes so well, reminds me of Burns in that respect. Has a great first pass. Needs to improve his puck reception, holding the blueline a bit longer. Focuses too much on challenging attackers with his speed and can get himself out of position easily.

IMO he's persona non grata at this point.

Of all the small Dmen that were available at the time, they just had to pick him.
Thought y'all were going to take Casey or Hutson in that range with the picks you had acquired. Bystedt was fine to take at 27, Lund was a reach at 34 IMHO, and Bystedt was alright at 45, but not worth taking ahead of several who everyone had ranked ahead of him.

Hävelid's had A LOT of injury problems the last few seasons, right now he's back on track and has been looking good the last few games. It's still quite far from where he was expected to be at this point, but if he can regain confidence and keep playing regularly he might still end up a top defender at SHL level at least.
