So wait... he likely hooked up with this chick then sent his buddies her instagram profile?... Who gives a flying f? If this is a problem the world is done.

He also took a photo of her during the sex act, but from reading the article iirc it said it only showed the top of her head and bra straps. But it's illegal in Sweden to photograph someone privately without their consent(from what I remember of the article?)

I think people are overreacting to the whole "giving away her personal information" part of it. The article says that Mailloux "also sent a screenshot of the victim’s online profile, which identified her to teammates by displaying her photo, first name and age". I don't know how many of you guys are social media savvy in here, but this sounds a whole lot like an Instagram profile, which would make sense, because the screenshot would include her username, profile pic, maybe three photos she has on her page, and her bio, which would include her name, age, and maybe other info depending on what the person wants to share. I don't think sharing the person who you just hooked up with is something weird or unnecessary to do, especially with Instagram, as their Instagram profile is already open to the public. It is not as though these kids are getting her phone number and making unnecessary comments to her in private conversations. For any teenage guy or teenage friend group, people obviously want to know and are curious about the girl their friend just scored, and sending their friends the girl's public Instagram account is the easiest way to do so, given that it is already public. I guarantee that whatever girl that got with Mailloux shared that exact info with her friends about Mailloux. It's not abnormal; when someone you are close with gets intimate with someone else, you of course want to see who it is and how well they did.

Is doing this enhanced by the photo? Yes. But sharing a profile after hooking up with someone is a normal thing to do. Some of the teammates probably already knew who the girl was before the whole incident happened because Mailloux probably mentioned that he might be hooking up with this girl beforehand and had more than likely been talking to her for a while at that point. And even if you only knew the girl by name, Instagram is public, so his teammates probably could have found her in a grand total of 5 seconds if he hadn't shared the profile, which they more than likely would have done.

He took a photo of her doing a sexual act without her knowledge and then shared it with his teammates. You don’t see a problem with that?

It’s bad but the act in question wasn’t actually photographed nor was her face or naked body in it.

Teams acting like he straight up raped somebody or abused a mentally challenged black kid are just virtue signalling. It’s bad but I’d still draft him regardless

I wasn't referencing that. I was referencing the fact that he sent his teammates the girl's Instagram after the fact so they could see who he got with, and that I think this is a relatively normal thing to do after hooking up with someone. I in no way condone the action you mentioned. I am very much against that part of it. It is extremely inappropriate for Mailloux to take that kind of defamatory picture without the girl's consent, let alone sending it to his teammates. Sending his teammates the girl's Instagram is different from sending the picture of her giving him head.

Mailloux actions here I think are very similar to so called "revenge porn", except he did not seem to have anything to revenge for. Punish the girl for being stupid enough to be attracted to him I guess.

No, it doesn't make him somehow irredeemable or some sort of lost cause.

At the same time, I just do not want to see him pulling on my team's jersey, simple as that.

I'm not going to act like I know what this is, so I am not going to jump to any conclusions about this paragraph from the article. Can anyone explain what this independent psychological review actually is and if the positive results are significant in any way? Looking at this as someone who doesn't necessarily know what a psychological review actually is and seeing its results, I am inclined to think that a professional, after talking with him for an extended period of time and analyzing his thoughts, emotions, etc., has described him as being sane, emotionally competent, and overall understanding of the depth of his actions, which to me seems to say that he feels remorse over his actions. Would I be correct in inferring this meaning, or am I reaching a little bit?

"Mailloux said he has sought biweekly counseling with a licensed psychologist since returning from Sweden. After the incident, the London Knights ordered an independent psychological review on Mailloux to determine whether he presented any “red flags” in terms of his mental health or social-emotional functioning. The results of the report, which were provided to Daily Faceoff by Mailloux with permission to publish medical details, indicated that Mailloux “displayed well-developed sport-related mental skills and emotional intelligence, with particularly strong self-actualization, independence, social responsibility, problem solving, impulse control, flexibility, reality testing and stress tolerance.”"

It's been done for a long time. This should be a non-issue.

What?

Look––I don't like the way the world is going with some recent trends either with regards to how everything is dragged out in public, but this should absolutely NOT be a non-issue!

Like I said in another thread: When you have sex, you don't automatically consent to having your picture taken and spread for all to see you in the nude in a sexual position. f*** that.
If he makes amends and takes his punishment, that's another issue, and it then becomes a matter of second chances, but it's absolutely not nothing and he has to atone.

*EDIT*: Seems like it was settled through payment.

I find it pathetic how people seriously act like this guy committed some grave sin. They are liars. They know plenty of people who did similar things at his age, and they might've done similar. They did the same thing last year in ruining Miller's life. If they get their way, they'll do the same to this kid.
There's only one person responsible for 'ruining' Mitchell Miller's life. I'll let you figure out who it is.

So many social justice warriors in here. Jesus.

Are you the same person you were at 17!? People change as they mature and I guarantee this kid will too.
There’s a reason he wasn’t charged with anything, people recognize that as a 17 year old, you’re not fully mature and the situation alone can be enough to change you and prevent you from doing it again.

People need to get a grip, enough of this “person makes mistake, let’s crucify them for it”

Wait till I tell you what Sheldon Souray and Dino Ciccerelli have done.

It's so weird seeing people focus so heavily on Logan here and be so worried about him, saying "Oh, why should it ruin his life?", as if this was a victimless crime. This is not him smoking a bit of weed. What he did has/had profound effects on the girl in question and if there is anyone's life that has been ruined by this it's hers. That matters, a lot. This type of thing can make a person suicidal. Not getting drafted seems like a pretty small price to pay in comparison.

I also realize that this behavior is really common at this age and particularly in places like junior hockey, but that's not an excuse for it to continue. People here say it's fine because it's so normal and 'why should Logan be so unfairly punished?' but that's the wrong way to look at things. There is now an opportunity for NHL teams to take a stand and show these players that this type of stuff doesn't fly if you want to make it to the big leagues. If Mallioux doesn't get drafted or signed in the immediate future and if his behavior will actual have an impact on his career that he'll feel (rather than just him apologizing and everyone pretends it's alright and no further action being taken) then there's at least a chance that the next player will think twice before engaging in this type of behavior.

Why are you just making shit up?

Man this thread is so cringe. "People did way worse things 25 years ago so this shouldn't be an issue!!!!". Imagine living your life with that kind of mindset. Every act of shitty behaviour is fine because much worse use to happen decades ago. Right...

And people defending Mitchell Miller . How come you're not trying to defend leipsic too?

It's interesting there's always a crowd to complain about this could ruin someone's life to be punished for doing something illegal and never when they aren't drafted because they're poor skaters. Like idk, that kid probably did try very hard to improve his skating without ruining someone else in the process

This idea of a Do Not Draft list allows certain people to feel extra powerful. If he goes into an interview and starts saying he'll cause problems in the team, thats a reason to not draft him. To not draft someone because they did some dumb shit as a teenager is utterly appalling.

How about the idea that teams don’t need to draft someone just because you say they do? They can have any reason they want, hockey or otherwise. It’s not up to us to decide. A “do not draft” list is what makes NHL teams feel “powerful”? Not the fact that they can draft whoever they want?

Spoiler alert: players are drafted as teenagers. Of course what they do as teenagers directly affects their draft status. And of course that’s going to be about more than just hockey. Read the room.

But what’s very clear is that social responsibility is something that matters to NHL teams now. You can refuse to believe it, or think it’s bullshit that doesn’t register, but obviously you’d be wrong, as has already been shown.

I don't really care if he is drafted or not. I am happy the victim apparently got closure on the incident, and was willing to meet with him after, when it could have had a much more tragic outcome. What I find most disgusting about the whole incident is the lack of response from the Swedish justice system, a joke of a fine, when if he was an adult it would have been jail time according to the article. That he was treated differently because he wasn't Swedish, as opposed to a Swedish minor found guilty of the same crime. The fact he was allowed to continue playing for his club, rather than at minimum being deported for committing a crime while probably on some type of work visa. If he had broken into a home and robbed a significant amount of money, would the response have been the same as for this sexual crime according to their laws?

Nobody is saying that it SHOULD be normalized. People are saying that it's a fact of life these days. He shared a pic that he shouldnt have. He paid a fine, went to counciling, apologized and basically has done everything in his power to correct a wrong. As a teenager. Why should this destroy his entire life?

Because professional hockey — and this includes for-profit major junior hockey — is, first and foremost, an entertainment business sold to families.

Logan Mailoux could be the second coming of Bobby Orr but if fans think “lock up your daughters” instead of “great player, great kid,” no number of Wins compensates for this.

The story in The Athletic (it’s unlocked so anyone can read it without a subscription) provides many missing details.

Several NHL teams drop Logan Mailloux from draft list after conviction in Sweden

He secretly photographed a woman while having sex and then shared the photos with his teammates. They didn’t know who she was, so Mailoux helpfully provided her Facebook profile link.

The players were horrified and reported him to the club’s management — the club’s director just happened to be the head of the local police division!

The “summary punishment by fine has the same legal effect as a guilty verdict, i.e. conviction from a court.”
In other words, Mailoux is a convicted sex offender in Sweden and the only thing that kept him out of the slammer was the 4.5 months between when he committed the crime and his 18th birthday.

And people are asking why this should prevent him from getting drafted? I asked one of my sons, who runs his own hockey training company, if he’d hire Mailoux to work for him and he rolled his eyes. Zero chance.

Look, Mailoux didn’t develop a drug problem or get caught drinking underage. His mistake is not immaturity or poor judgment. There is no suggestion he has a mental health affliction or impairment.
No, he knowingly committed a sex crime. That’s what he did.

The Swedish club, SK Lejon, continued to allow Mailoux to stay on the team after the offence to ensure he didn’t flee the country and escape criminal prosecution. Once the legal process concluded, Mailoux was gone.

Do you want Mailoux at the meet and greet with season ticket holders? Going into local schools to talk to girls and boys? Hospitals? If he was interested in your daughter, would you be cool with that?
He’s not a jerk who made a youthful indiscretion. He’s a convicted sex criminal. How many convicted sex offenders do you know? How many are in junior or professional hockey?

Legendary basketball coach John Wooden once said, “Sports don’t build character. They reveal it.”

I speak only for myself. I won’t pay one thin dime for the “privilege “ of watching him play hockey.

Bad decision that the kid made. Should definitely be punished for it from a legal standpoint, but this isn’t a forums about the law…. Every year we have a suspect like this who ends up being drafted regardless of how “bad” people think they are.

How is his game on the ice?? Who’s a comparable NHL player?? Is he projected to be a top 4?

I spoke about this with my girlfriend, because I think it's grotesque, but I'm trying to find the line of "young kids do really stupid things. Where's the nuance of letting people learn?" Especially when I read somewhere he started seeing a psychologist bi-weekly after this happened.

My girlfriend reminded me this is the sort of behavior that has caused young women to commit suicide. The public humiliation, social stigmatism, etc. It was a very gross and stupid thing which has wrecked both their lives.

He should be sorry. It sounds like he is, but it is unclear if it's for the damage he caused her or the damage he caused himself.

If there's a team who is interested in drafting him, I truly hope they speak to the victim first. If she feels it's in the past and has moved on, they should continue to educate not just Mailoux, but continue addressing this sort of education to communities

I think he'll probably still be drafted. If teams actually cared about players sharing photos of women they slept with their rosters would shrink by half.

Perhaps but do they care about social media outrage? Gonna take a GM who feels secure enough to deal with that fallout and with a plan to get out in front of it.
