I have been extremely impressed by the defenseman. I saw him once playing in the U20 league this year, and recently in the U18 WC. Great skater with smooth stride, really good puck handling skills, a good shot and plays with grit. He's not overly big at 5´10, but his skills are something to watch.

I'm really interested in seeing how he'll do next season. He´s one of the 2014 draft eligible Finns I'll definitely keep an eye on.

Some thoughts from u18s

Really liked how he moved the puck up with speed and with great hands. Used really long stick and used it well on the d. Good pass out of the d-zone but also made some horrible mistakes with the puck ie. 3-1 goal in the canada game. Physical player for his size, positions himself well in front of the net.

Lacked vision in the offensive zone and didn't seem very creative, He moved the puck well but seemed like he didn't know what to do with it when he entered the o-zone. Interesting player nevertheless
Craig Button compared him to Kimmo Timonen and seemed to like him.

Unless he makes Jyp's sm-liiga team, i think he will.

wouldn't the CHL be a better development place though? i think FEL is very underrated and i think its a great way, but how good are JYP at developing offensive side of defensemen? i feel like there's very few good defensemen coming out of the FEL. CHL might do him good but if JYP are good at developing him, he should stay

JYP has developed Sami Vatanen. Not too many players before that, but their junior developing is getting better, I think they also have Julius Nättinen (Forward) in their organisation.

JYP actually seems to be a rather good place as an organization for young defensemen these days. As mikko1995 said, Sami Vatanen played in JYP, it's also the youth team of Olli Määttä (who left to play in the OHL). If Honka can make the FEL team, he should stay IMO. If he'd have to play in the juniors or Finland's 2nd-tier league, then I think he should leave for the CHL.

Unless he makes Jyp's sm-liiga team, i think he will.

For JYP there's at least Näkyvä, Luoma, Kalteva and Välivaara that are core defensemen, then there's Viitanen who probably gets a roster spot, so there's essentially 5 young players (I included Honka) vying for the final defenseman spot. If all the core players stay healthy and JYP might even aquire an additional defenseman, it's going to be pretty hard for Honka to get many games under his belt next season. So unless he takes a huge step in the offseason it'll be tough for him.

In general all SM-liiga teams have good coaching organizations, level of competition is high and the environment usually good for young players to improve. So there isn't a team where you definitely wouldn't want a prospect to stay.

The reason why so few NHL defensemen have come out of the SM-liiga is due to the lack of talent from junior leagues. It's hard to develop world class players from mediocre juniors. However Vatanen and Määttä are both products of the JYP organization (organizations in Finland range from the mens team down to the youngest 3-4 year-old juniors), so atleast JYP isn't the worst team to be in if you're a young developing defenseman.

That said, and due to the unlikelihood of Honka making the men's team, the CHL could be a good idea. Competition is much higher than in juniors in Finland, and he get's a taste of NA play.

There's also the possibility (probably the most likely one if he stays here) is that he plays in JYP's farm team in the men's 2nd division, JYP Akatemia. Level of play is decent and the team is made up of 18-23 year-olds mostly.

Ive become honka fan since last years u18 champs. the guy can have 2 enemies tailing him and he will always skate out with the puck. incredible poise and some jonas brodin in his game. im amazed this guy is basicly in nobodys draft book not even a 2nd rounder. i personally could safely place him in the top60 picks for next years draft.

I was very impressed with him too especially that skating. But he isn't Jonas Brodin type of player. Brodin was spotless defensively from young age. Honka isn't as developed defensively but offensively he is more talented despite i think that Brodin's offensive game is very underrated. But i wouldn't put Honka in the same tier as Brodin atleast for now. I could see him being 1st rounder if he continues his strong play in the CHL.

Great start by Honka

In 2 games 1+5 +4

Watched his first game, looked like really great. He has added some calmness to his game during the summer and looks like he knows what do in the offensive zone now, instead just dumping the puck. Played on first pp unit and gave some really crisp passes out there from the blue line. He has great shot as well. Also makes great passes out of the d-zone and showed some amazing puck moving abilities too.

Should make the Finland's u20 team and be a late first or second round pick if he keeps playing like this. Only knock is his size and strength (5'10,176 lbs)

Extremely impressive stats already when you consider he just came over this year and has to adapt to smaller ice. Albeit I have only seen one game from him but that game was a standout one. Think this guy could be a top notch prospect as the year continues.

Slowly catching up on my PVR, I finally caught the opener vs Regina.

Really good instincts and skills offensively. Surprised there wasn't more hype.

I look forward to seeing more.
