To be fair there is a massive difference between not breaking 40 and being Tanev, who has one season with more than 20 points to his name in his career.

In his Flames career you could be right about him not breaking 40 mostly because there is about a 5% chance Parekh doesn’t own the top powerplay for the Flames for a decade plus, and roughly 10 defenseman league wide hit 40 ESP per year. His vision for making plays in the O-Zone and the breakout is just too great for him ever to have a Tanev-esque career though.

Back on topic to Mews, he could force some very interesting decisions in 3-4 years for Calgary. Considering Weegar a LD even though he’s playing on the right side currently, Calgary has Andersson and Pachal (a 25 year old providing fantastic minutes as a 5D currently) as notable RD on the roster and all of Parekh, Mews, and Brzustewicz as high potential prospects. On the left side Calgary has Weegar and 4 young defenseman in Bahl, Kuznetsov, Morin, and Grushnikov. Calgary is going to be able to trade some very good defenseman for forward help down the line to make the log jam work. In 3-4 years:

Bahl-Andersson/Parekh
Weegar-Brzustewicz/Mews
Kuznetsov/Morin-Pachal/Mews
Grushnikov

Considering Brzus and Parekh as >80% chance of being NHLers and Mews and Morin as ~50%, Calgary likely has 3 defenseman and/or prospects they need to trade in the next 3 years.

Fun side note, last season Calgary had 4 defense prospects top 10 in P/GP in their respective CHL leagues. This year, Calgary has 3 within the top 3 of their respective leagues.
Weegar is RHS and can play both sides. He's consistently better on the right side though. This is why I'm an advocate of not signing Ras to a 10M contract. Move him and get a young center.

I like it personally. The risk of him playing 4 years seems like a non-factor.

Play against some older kids for a year or two. Start pushing for the AHL/NHL
He wouldn’t have to play 4 years. He only needs to play 25/26 without signing and he’s a FA. Calgary might not be too hurt by that though as they have a few defenseman in the system as is.

What? You can get a FA after one year in NCAA? Or do you mean just refusing to sign his ELC

I think they'll clarify this this offseason in the new CBA to prevent a "Reverse Mike Van Ryn" Loophole from becoming the norm.

As the CBA is set up now, players drafted out of the CHL have their rights held for 2 years by their NHL club. If they aren’t signed after that period of time, they become FA’s. If he’s going to play NCAA, he can’t sign his ELC.

I can't imagine the teams/league didn't see that coming. Wouldn't he revert to being an NCAA prospect?

Mews is exactly the kind of player that it makes sense to leave the CHL when he still has pre-overage eligibility. He is on an unattractive team to play for as a 19 year old (Sudbury), he definitely isn’t making the NHL for at least a few years, and he could potentially even be assigned to the ECHL at 20/21 given his inconsistent play. He goes to Michigan and he can re-enter the draft (assuming he retains CHL rules for his NHL retention) and maybe get into a better development situation. If Mews gets redrafted after a year at Michigan with a situation he likes, he can leave at that time or he can wait it out and maybe be NHL ready by the team he signs his ELC. Just more options and he avoids the risk of ending up in the ECHL.

Of course he could stay and play his D+2 season in the OHL but there’s even more uncertainty doing that.
