RD Henry Mews - Ottawa 67's, OHL (2024, 74th, CGY)

Just got shipped out to Sudbury.

So I guess the rumours about him not getting along with Cameron were true. Otherwise the 67s most certainly wouldn't have traded him. He's a local kid after all. Him being unhappy might explain his sometimes rather uninspiring, lackluster play.

The rumors suggest he plans to go the collegiate route after this season.

Makes sense for the 67's if that is the case.

I don't doubt he threatened to do that in order to get out of Ottawa...but why would he actually go to college?

The reality is that early draft picks doing well in major junior leagues tend to get offered ELC's. Therefore, the new college option is mostly interesting for undrafted kids and later round picks not expecting to get ELC's. At least that's my understanding. I'm sure there will be the odd exception prioritizing education. Is Mews gonna be one of them? I doubt it. And the Flames are gonna want him in their system.

It seems you have already gotten your conclusion and are just working back from it. Mews isn’t eligible to play in the AHL next year, he and/or the Flames could just view playing against older competition better for his development? Both he and the Flames know about the potential he’s displayed to date, I doubt he’s worried much about not getting an opportunity with an organization if he doesn’t sign immediately.

Maybe he butt heads with Cameron. Maybe they traded him because he’s planning on running to the NCAA. Maybe they traded him because the 67s are awful. What we do know is that we don’t have enough evidence for any conclusion yet.

Lol. Of course he's not eligible to play AHL but what would be the point of going to college for one year? I'm European so you tell me...but I'm not sure there is one.

The 67s traded local 06 born kid Mews but not Pinelli, not Foster, not Gerrior, not Dever, not Mayich...etc.

If you look at the trades Boyd made those are all guys who wanted out. Boyd wasn't selling, he was doing guys a solid. He kept every single one of the guys who wanted to stay...even those he probably should have traded in a year the 67s most certainly won't be contenders.

Older competition, higher average level of competition, more structured hockey etc. Also there are a fair amount of 1 and done college players, and plenty more examples of college players signing after their D+2 seasons. Mews also isn’t forced to just play 1 season if he and the Flames don’t feel he’s ready for pro yet. Being so dismissive of this really suggests you just want there to be drama.

Maybe he is going to the NCAA so they wanted a return on the lost season. Maybe the offer for the defenseman who leads the team in scoring was the only offer so far that they loved? Once again, sounds like you’ve just already decided what you believe. And maybe it’s true, but until there’s any news backing it you’ll have to forgive others for being less certain.

How can you love the offer? It's honestly not very good. I couldn't care less if there was drama but all signs are pointing torwards it.
And again, Boyd has been pretty consistent in his approach this season. It started early with Gardiner and ended late with Mews. He traded the guys who wanted to go, kept every single one of the guys who wanted to stay. He made trades to do guys a solid, not for the returns. From a business point of view that's probably very stupid but Boyd is a class act trying to do what's best for the kids.

Maybe he does want out… to go to college? The very specific sign you stopped replying to when it no longer was apart of “all signs point to drama”.

Lol. We'll see. Not many high NHL draft picks are gonna go from major junior to college. Like I said that's something mostly interesting for undrafted kids or those picked in the later rounds not expecting to get an ELC. ELC is always gonna be more attractive than college for 9 out of 10 kids at least. Top64 picks with Mews kinda stats are not gonna leave major junior leagues for college. That's a stupid rumour and maybe something he threatened to do but not really an option he's realistically considering

Why would Mews not go play in a more competitive league (NCAA) next year? He’s too young for the AHL.. It would be good for development. Saying this is about drama is just a bizarre and based on nothing. Ottawa isn’t a good team. Trading him makes sense.

Again, I don't know if it makes sense to play college for one year. You tell me.

I also don't know if kids are even gonna be allowed to leave the CHL early to play NCAA.

I'm not really up to date but I read a statement by the WHL saying that they're happy their players now get a chance to play NCAA after finishing their CHL contract.

CHL leagues would have to change their player agreements for kids to be able to leave for the NCAA before the end of their contract.

And no, based on the underwhelming return the Mews trade does not make sense. This does look like a deal made to do the player a solid.

Also, as a 1st round pick and local kid, Mews almost certainly had an NTC he waived to go to Sudbury.

You do know that his ELC slides if he plays junior next year right? Like his options aren’t play NCAA or make money in the OHL. Him playing NCAA slows down absolutely nothing towards him playing professional hockey and earning a professional pay cheque.

2 people have now told you why it could make sense, at this point you’re just being obtuse to cling to your argument.

He went from a team with a .474 winning percentage to a team with a .635 winning percentage. I’m sure drama is the only reason he’d waive his NTC if he had one.

Mews scores off a rebound in his Wolves debut, exciting!

Looks like the Wolves are going for a good playoff push last year after being whopped by the Battalion. The run-and-gun style they ran last year has seemed to disappear and it's now more reasonable in my opinion. Power play definitely needs work but it's looking better as a whole.

3 points on 4 goals on the same day you’re traded is a heck of a debut.

Had Monahan vibes in the sense of being a bright spot on a bad 67s team. Excited to see his production on a stronger team, already looking like an absolute gem
