I can literally use that exact trade in the opposite direction. The Canadiens gave up Sergachev too soon and paid the price for it
I don't see it that way. The Bolts managed to seduce another team to take the bait on an asset they already knew was depreciating.

The Habs just thought they were trading a future star for a future star.

You don't have to see it that way but Jiricek could just as easily be Sergachev in this story as he is Drouin

I agree lol. I want him out of CBJ asap. He will never play NHL in this club, I really dont have faith in the organization who is rather scraping up useless players from all around the league like Fabbro or Harris then playing their own prospects.

If not Jiricek, then why is not Mateychuk or Svozil getting a chance? I mean they are almost dead last anyway, how much worse could it be if they put those three youngsters in the lineup instead of the overaged washouts who are not going anywhere anymore.

I mean team that is almost last in the league and sucks, signing and rather playing 25-26yrs old below average players rather then his own prospects with much bigger potential is just stupid, I am sorry.
Why does it always have to be the team's fault? Just spitballing here, but could it be that Jiricek is simply not good enough for the NHL right now and has too much of an ego to agree to be sent down to the minors to get some reps in and polish his game?

NHL minutes should be earned and not given freely to whoever feels entitled to have them because they were a top 10 picks.

I'm not familiar with players being able to say no to AHL. Do you have any proof of this?

I've definitely seen, in the past, a guy get sent to AHL.. then refuses to go and gets suspended or has his contract terminated and returns to Europe. But that is AFTER being sent. I'm honestly not familiar with players telling their team they are too good for the AHL and the team saying 'oh, okay, we won't send you then'.

As far as not good enough.. that could be very true. He's played roughly 60 minutes of hockey since October 8th.

Rumours are that he will ask for a trade if sent down to the AHL.

By the way, this is not a knock on the player. He’s still only 20 years old. Most young D aren’t NHL ready until 21-22 and show real growth at 23-25. Broberg is a very good example of what I’m referring to.

This is a shit situation to be in as an NHL team. Young & talented RHD are very, very rare to find but at the same time the kid isn’t ready. Imo, this is on Jiricek and he needs someone close to him to tell him the truth and let him develop properly down in the AHL until his game is NHL ready.

*Most of the time with young D like Jiricek the issue is timing and confidence. The few times I’ve seen Jiricek in the NHL I felt he was still too timid with and without the puck, which leads to rushed plays and bad reads. It isn’t a skill issue but rather an experience and maturity (in his game/timing) issue.

I'd be fine with him full time in AHL. He needs to play. I personally don't get it. 5 games played and going on 2 months here. Or send him down for games on the weekend and bring him back during the week as most AHL games are only 2x a week. But, right now, he's doing nothing.

It's also frustrating that Fabro and Johnson are blocking him. That's not very encouraging.

I do agree he needs to improve and do more, hit the gym etc. I'm not saying he should be full time NHL top 4. I'm saying he should be playing a lot of hockey though. If that's Cleveland.. then get your ass to Cleveland. If they send him to Cleveland and he refuses.. then he's an asshole. But I want to see that 'Jiricek suspended for not reporting to AHL' tweet first.

Mateychuk, yeah.
It means that Mateychuk is “NHL ready” and Jiricek isn’t.

Even if the team isn’t a Stanley Cup contender, the players want to win hockey games. Most of the people not paying any attention to the CBJ should realize the team/organization is PAST the “rebuild” phase, has had about as bad of a 4-5 year stretch you could have, and needs to win games as soon as possible, for the best interest of essentially everyone involved or connected to the team in any way.

While Mateychuk might not be a “difference maker” RIGHT NOW at the NHL level, he has shown that he is at a completely different level than Jiricek currently.

I can see the Canucks making a run at Jiricek, and they have what the Blue Jackets would want in return

To Columbus: Hoglander, McWard, Forbort, Felton, 2026 5th round pick

To Vancouver: Jiricek, 2025 4th round pick
Good as long as we are hanging onto Jackson Dorrington, if the Jackets insist on him the deal if off.

Mateychuk > Jiricek
Bold assumption considering he hasnt played a single NHL game yet. And Jiricek also looked great in AHL and Juniors.

But you may be right of course. Considering this, jacket should really trade Jiricek, because I can already see that if some young D gets a chance after all in their lineup it's gonna be Mateychuk. Really there is no future for Jiricek in this team.

They don't even fill the same role or position. Strangely enough they actually looked good together in preseason. I think we'll see Jiricek go down soon and they can be a mega minute pairing

Some prospects take time, and others never pan out. TBD which Jiricek is. Only thing mildly unusual about his case is his public statements about how "ready" he is, but i'll put that down to youthful frustration, perhaps at his handling by the previous management team.

He might get a mid late 1st in trade from some team, or something of similar value. I don't see that CBJ needs to move him for that return, but it could be that they want to move on.

The first article is from last season. It's notable he says this:
"I see guys from the same draft, like Simon Nemec and (Kevin) Korchinski ... they get a chance on the power play," Jiricek said. "They play a ton of minutes in the NHL. Those are different teams, so different situations, but I can compare with them. I just want a chance to play like that."

Guess where both Nemec and Korchinski are right now... yep the AHL.

He said he wanted to get a 'chance like they got'. He's never gotten that chance unless I missed a 20 minute game with PP duties?
FTR.. every first round pick would like a chance in the NHL for their position. It's not outlandish to say this. Lots of guys, for instance, say they hope to make the squad in their first training camp.

I think a lot of people are interpretting this as him saying 'I refuse to go to AHL and want to be gifted top 4 minutes'. That's not what he said.

It is funny though that all 3 will be in AHL soon.lol

He can't send himself to the AHL.

I don't see anyone arguing he should have Top 4 minutes right now. But he's played 5 games since October 8th. That's not right for a 20 year old prospect.
Obviously, but it’s clear CBJ management is trying to toe a line with him. It’s almost like they’re trying to prove to him that he’s not ready. Which sucks for him, but it’s also true and he should know this himself without having to be told.

As for the games played thing, I agree he should be playing top minutes in the AHL, but I don’t think having an NHL environment for a bit is a hindrance. He gets better trainers, NHL speed practices, etc. Those things are worth something even if he misses 10 or so AHL games.
