RD Chase Reid - SSM Greyhounds, OHL (2026 Draft)

Late bloomer for hockey due to the birthyear system, but he's probably older to middle aged for his Class of 2026 growing up in Michigan (not sure what the cut date is in Chesterfield), so he likely was nowhere close to being the youngest growing up. Definitely plays a factor in hockey though of course.
For school yeah, but his hockey page is a bunch of AAA teams that were 07 born players. Born a few days later and he's playing with the 08 kids, eligible in the same NHL draft and likely more known up until now because he'd be one of the oldest players in the cohort.

If your a high end skill dmen do you really want head to Waterloo next year ? Reid’s a really good player - Michigan state head recruiter is one of the top guys in the country - they are not dumb , Waterloo completely blew it or an epic level .

Point streak extended to 5 games. PPG goes down after he gets a primary assist on the team's only goal of the game, but that's how it is when you have a PPG over 1. I guess Nordh must've tipped his point shot. Reid only has 1 goal so far for SSM. Feels like he's due for some goals.

Yeah, it’s early, but I think he’s looking like a top contender for first defensemen picked next year. He’s 6’2/6’3, an amazing skater, and putting up elite offensive totals in the O this year, especially for a 2026 eligible. Defense needs a little work, but not too bad.

How could USA Hockey and Waterloo make such colossal errors? Does he have Trevor Connelly type skeletons in his closet?

USA Hockey literally picked dudes for the Hlinka that won't even get drafted, and they left a likely top 5-10 pick off the team?

And Waterloo didn't have playing time for one of the best defensemen in the OHL?

None of this makes any sense.

Seeing how many young players were either ignored or not given more prominent developmental roles in the USHL - who are now blossoming in the CHL…it’s pretty eye opening. It definitely seems extra annoying when it’s American kids - although I think Reid may be a uniquely egregious omission on multiple levels.

At least we will see him on the WJC team in the next couple of years, right?

PS - nice job sticking with your evaluation after a slow start to the season by Reid ;)

Next years draft class is going to be so stacked it’s not even funny
Exactly and elite prospects is asleep on him as he should be in the top prospects section as he is every bit as good as Keaton Verhoeff who is listed there and there are some other really good Dmen from the Dub for the 26 draft as well in Ryan Lin, Carson Carels, Daxon Randolph and then there is Xavier Villeneuve from the Q as well.

2026 is shaping up to be an excellent draft.

For the dman only, you could add Benjamin Cossette-Ayotte (QMJHL), Luke Schairer (USA), Malte Gustafsson and Axel Elofsson (Sweden), Juho Piiparinen and Samu Alalauri (Finland). All potential first rounders.

Potential historical draft in the making

0+2 for him tonight.

2+24=26 points in 21 games now on the season.

His PPG this season is just under Schaefer's (1.24 compared to 1.29). And obviously a draft behind him. Only a little over 100 days younger, so not like a full year younger, but still impressive that he's keeping pace.

It's getting hard to justify that Reid isn't a likely top 5 pick next year with the numbers he's putting up for a 6'3 defenseman with great skating.

A couple notes from a game I watched;

- Tall frame, about 6'2" I presume possibly bigger (eliteprospects page has to be off)
- Lacks physical strength and explosiveness, he likely just hit a growth spurt and is still gaining weight
- Really strong playmaker
- Terrific vision
- Great at receiving passes and using his lengthiness to open lanes that might not be there for smaller players
- Great at joining the rush at appropriate times, many defenseman don't seize the opportunities like he does
- Can be weak defensively in the corners, but makes great use of his body to box out the opposition
- Gets caught flat footed through the neutral zone
- Gains a lot of speed using his hips (great crossovers)
- Struggles with quickness/explosive steps

He has an entire summer to improve on some of this stuff and most players his age struggle. Even Schaefer wasn't that dominant the year prior

He had a rough game last night but that's to be expected from time to time for a rookie D man.
