Well kudos to Menell's agent at the very least... I guess he got Covid, sorry... but aside from that he has done very well in a good spot and raised his profile accordingly playing in the world's 2nd best league. I mean, semantics arguments about the term "dominating" aside, he has taken his game onto a different stage and shown (again) that he has something worth looking at, right? :dunno:

The big difference is Menell is pretty young unlike most of these guys but my point is, KHL D point production really isn't the metric anyone should be basing their NHL hopes on.

Yes that is the difference and it’s far from a lock he can be a difference maker in the NHL. It’s a great story because he has been overlooked at every turn and he just quietly puts up numbers and helps his team win. He also showed some balls by opting to go to the KHL in the middle of a pandemic to play in the 2nd best league in the world. Have to respect it.

Exactly.

Yeah, the team was on a hot streak when he played. And lost a lot more often when he didn't. Hmm.
:sarcasm:
They missed several top players because of COVID, and their hot streak was largerly due to them having advantage in conditioning early in the season.

And I want to point out, I just took the issue with the word "dominating" and have no personal agenda against Menell, in my opinion, he has to learn to be better defensively, but offensively he is very good at KHL level

Tied for the lead with Lehtonen for points and P/GP by a Dman, 16pts in 15gp. I would guess that both got bit by Covid earlier. Menell is still logging a ton of minutes.

Didn't Lehtonen used to be a forward, or have i got the wrong guy?

Probably. There was a forward named Mikko Lehtonen who was drafted by the Bruins and appeared in two games 10 years ago. He subsequently spent most of his career in Europe.

Guy is rocking the score sheet in the KHL. 30 points in 39 games as a dman is impressive. He was also on the AHL first all-star team last season. He could be useful on a NHL team PP team.

43gp, 5g, 30a 24:01/G TOI Second in scoring amongst Dmen, and would've led if he wasn't out with Covid for a few weeks. Leads KHL Dmen in PPG and TOI.

The guy has consistently put up points in both the KHL and the AHL for 3 years, and is still relatively young. He deserves a shot year to make an NHL roster next fall.

Wild still holds his rights, right?

What’s the problem with his game? Skating? Seems like a guy who should definitely be in the NHL. There are so many bad defensemen in the league. Even if this guy never sticks in the NHL, he should at least be good enough to get an extended amount of games to prove he can play in the NHL.

Well, he is/was a RHD that has Spurgeon and Dumba ahead of him. Both are moderate to small RHD with above average offensive and PP skills. There wasn't a crying need for his skills in the NHL on his team like there would be on others. This might change in the future if Dumba is moved.

He would've got some NHL time this year, but decided to sign with D. Minsk. He would've started out in the AHL, and had to depend on a call up. 13 games in, the Wild have already traded their 3rd pairing RHD , and 5 of their 7 Dmen have been out with Covid, resulting in MN playing guys like Dakota Mermis, Cale Addison, Bartkowski, Belepedio. The only one of those guys who might get playing time over Menell is Addison, who plays a very similar game(RH, smallish, PMD, some defensive questions).

So, the answer to your question is that he would've already played some NHL games this year if he hadn't signed elsewhere. It's his own doing....Guerin was not happy that he decided to do so.

Oh, and his weakness is playing defense, and withstanding a heavy game, whether it be in front of the net or along the boards. It remains to be seen whether he can adjust his game so that he can be better in those areas(like Spurgeon), or if he will always be an offensive specialist.

He looked fine last year and capable. Probably would be playing but he bolted for the KHL for security

Now 2 points behind Wideman for KHL Dman scoring. Has played 12 less games than Wideman, so he leads in PPG by a long shot. He will be either with MN next year, or used as a nice trade chip. He's not a physical guy, but is 6', so not tiny, and is a RHD. Would have some value, I would think.

Wilds depth chart was as followed at the time and pandemic looming ahl questions.

Brodin
Suter
Spurgeon
Dumba
Soucy
Pateryn
Hunt
Belpeido
And likely scrubs like
Bartkowksi

Not to mention Addison mermis etc.

I don't blame him for wanting to have the best chance to develop. He was in the middle of an unprecedented time for the league with spots on teams drying up fast and the choice of gambling on AHL with likely very little to none nhl time or go get full reps in what is considered the 2nd or 3rd best league in the world.

Easy choice if your goal is to get better and you aren't afraid to hop the pond.
