The problem with the pokecheck is not that a pokecheck is wrong in that situation, it's that he does it before he can even reach the puck, so his opponent can easily read what he's doing and walk around him. Pokechecks should be disguised, for the same reason that goalies have to hide it if they plan on doing it. It's not a big deal, just a somewhat baffling technical error, you'd think an NCAA level player would have better technique.
The more worrying problem was when he got back into the play, he clearly has five opponents in front of him going to his net. The PK winger role there is also to go to the net and tie up a man. Being able to count is really important. I don't mean literal counting, I mean that players with okay hockey sense would all know if there were five players in front of them and zero behind them. It's possible that Lev knew and just made a poor decision.
Being able to know when to cheat and when to play defense is a really difficult thing. Successful rovers in the NHL all have incredible hockey sense. I think if you try to have Levshunov play this way in the NHL he would be picked to pieces.
I don't think Lev has the hockey sense to be a #1 with any playstyle. There are plenty of D in the NHL who have #1 type tools. There aren't many that move better than Mike Matheson or Thomas Chabot, but those guys aren't #1s because they don't process the game well enough. Same with Nurse and Provorov.
I mean yea nhl coaches will give him shit for that but he is an 18 year old prospect playing against older players while aslo being asked to be the offensive engine of the team. I mean he is nowhere near a finished product. He will get professional coaches who will further refine his defensive game and focus. and even in the nhl you see players make worse plays than that.
he has a ton of time to be coached and to learn. not to mention the natural experience he will pick up working on his game.
i think his hockey sense is fantastic tbh, people will sometimes point to his misplays as lack of hockey sense when often those misplays are high hockey sense reads that just didn't work out. but again he is only 18, and it's not hockey sense issue its an execution issue.
he likes to push the play and be a difference maker those players will always do things that other players don't have the hockey sense for and sometimes they look really stupid when it doesn't work out.
it's also the role he is being asked to play for his teams success, im sure if a coach asked him to play in a defensive minded match up style he would look like a different player.
his hockey sense is what makes him special for me. like lots of defenders have tools. few have the tools and the hockey sense like Lev.
but we will see who is right i guess.
also the whole point of the stick check was to surprise the pointman while he is getting his orientation. if he waits for the player to get his head up the element of surprise is gone and there is no play left to make, so he tries to use his long reach to aggressively force the play. he is microseconds late and the point man also makes a great play. whatever happens to the best.
but im more encouraged by his read on that play than anything.
