Rating our D-men

Chara - #3
Krug - #3 or #4
Seids #5
Liles #4 or #5
MacQuaid #5
K Miller #6
Trotman #6
C Miller ???
Morrow ???

K Miller was very good today. Deserved to be in that lineup. Solid performance from that entire group.

I'm far from his biggest fan, but Kevan Miller was pretty solid today and has been for the last few games he's played. Possibly it's playing with Z allows him to simplify, but the one goal allowed today was about 90% Chara turning the puck over by not recognizing a one-man forecheck when he had possession & space and getting bumped off the puck, creating the scramble situation. Miller *did* have a chance to get the puck out of the zone, but it wasn't a cut-and-dried play.

Chara- 2
Krug- 4
Liles- 4
McQuaid- 4
Seidenberg- 5
Miller- 6

Out of the current 6 that is how I view them. I am a little more bullish on McQuaid than others, I like how he steps up in the playoffs and I felt like he has been relatively stable all year...at least relative to a lot of the other guys. He just has the injury concerns.

A 2, 3 4s, a 5, and a 6. Thank goodness for Tuukka.

Honestly, I think forwards who play a responsible two way game are more important than D. It's no accident that when Kejci or Bergeron are on the ice the teams GAA is 2.1x. Kevan Miller doesn't transform into Ray Bourque with those guys on the ice, he just has more possession help.

Chara - #2
Krug - #4
Liles - #4
Seidenberg - #4/5
McQuaid - #5
K.Miller - #6/7
Morrow - #5/6
Trotman - #7

Colin Miller is the wildcard. He's probably like a #6 now but has the upside to realistically be a #3/4.

I'll take a crack at it:
Chara
Seids
Liles/Krug/McQuaid
Prospects

That's how I rank them. As for the whole legit #1, solid #4 stuff... I'll leave that to you guys.

Oh and my opinion.

Chara 2/2b 5-5 shutdown and some PK, still a leader could be #2 to strong minute eater with offensive upside.

Liles 3, maybe a 2b, still evaluating

Siedes strong 3 could still play a stay at home 2 to a prime Chara

Krug 3 based on mobility and "potential" offense

McQuaid 3/4/5 depending on the day really, if what he brings fits, he becomes more important

K Miller 4/6/8 lately he's making an argument for himself but I'll leave plenty of room for regression

Chiller,Trots and Mo ... all still young for defense, all with varied potential, you really only want one on the ice unless it's practice.

I rate the player based on what he earns , we simply can’t expect the same things out of two players that are on completely different ends of the pay scale. In a cap world, to me , it’s all about bang for the buck. Chara is still top dog on the Bruins D core but at the same time is simply not worth anywhere near his cap hit compared to his peers.

Chara D

K Miller B

Morrow B

McQuaid C

20) Shayne Gostisbehere 925,000

33) Dougie Hamilton 5,750,000
34) Dion Phaneuf 7,000,000
35) Ryan McDonagh 4,700,000

The only player with a bigger cap hit than Chara is Phaneuf, who most would agree is way overpayed for what he brings. Chara is ranked 29th in points production. Most players from 20th to 35th ranked are making roughly 60% of what Chara makes or less. Some significantly less. Most of these guys are also staples on 1st wave PP and OT while Chara, it can be argued shouldn’t be used in either capacity. He also struggles with puck handling, clearing the zone and has become painfully slow.

This is the best post on rating the D , I have read. Chara and to a lesser degree Sidenberg are not performing anywhere close to where they need to be for the money they are earning

No one's pay check means dick once the puck is dropped.

Sure it does, getting bang for your buck is everything when your dealing with a salary cap. Between Chara and Sieds we have 11M tied up. Look at the list and see what you could have in their place, it's incredible. Imagine Shayne Gostisbehere, John Carlson and Victor Hedman all for under 9M. Now I get that I'm cherry picking but if the puck drops with those 3 in your lineup do you really think it wouldn't mean dick?

I don't see why Morrow and C. Miller wouldn't be the bottom pairing next year. Chara/McQ and Seids/Krug should be the top 4, assuming that we can't trade or sign a legit top 4 guy. Let the kids play and develop, and in a few years, reap the rewards. Enough of mediocre defenseman getting huge minutes and never becoming anything more.

Don't kid yourselves. Every team would love to have Chara in their top pairing when the playoffs role around. He is a one of kind force.

Then we should have unloaded him for a king's ransom at the TDL.

I think Sweeney has done a solid job fixing the cap problems, restocking the farm, making this team a more offensive threat including the power play... Now this upcoming offseason the defense needs to be his main focus. I think he has already done a solid Job adding for the future with C Miller, Zboril, Carlo and Lauzon. this team really needs a good experienced top 2 dman. It really stinks there isn't a big time UFA dman on the market

Well, there is Yandle... though he's not exactly a two-way guy. I think Sweeney needs to pursue Yandle aggressively no matter what. Add to that Shattenkirk and the defence looks pretty good all of a sudden. Trying to find a long term replacement to Chara with just one big trade might be undoable. HOF defencemen don't exactly grow on trees.

Right cause we looked so solid when he missed games at the beginning of the year. This team is lost without him.

Beginning of the season with what 7-8 new faces on the roster and Tuukka playing like he was still on summer vacation - yeah Chara was the absolute difference.

I think you missed the point.

Sure, it would be great to have those 3 players. But how much they get paid wouldn't have anything to do with it.

Maybe because they are both inexperienced and not good in their own zone?

What if I told you Liles is a good #2-3 while Seidenberg barely qualifies as a #6?

They need to gain experience by PLAYING. We can save money on the cap, and have two good mobile defenseman as a bottom pairing. They can get offensive zone starts and play sheltered minutes as a pair, and can gain valuable experience.

Not going to happen, especially if Julien is still running things.

They can play without playing at the same time. Though Morrow needs to show more.
