To VAN:
2024 First Round Pick
Timothy Liljegren
Nick Robertson

To TOR:
Filip Hronek

Rationale for VAN:
They likely try to re-sign him but will tap out at his current ask. They put him in a position to increase his value and get a package that is worth more than what they paid for him. Robertson hurts to lose because I see a future 20 goal scorer but the loss will hurt less when we give McMann a full season and have Cowan waiting in the wings. Lilly has not progressed enough to command a top 4 role so I think it is time to move on from him.

Rationale for TOR:
We've longed for that RHD for forever so let's acquire one now. Hronek has a good shot from the point, which we lack, and can facilitate the offence in transition. He is still pretty young for dman. The Leafs can offer a hefty signing bonus to get the AAV down a bit. He became a legitimate #2/#3 in Vancouver.

What say you? Is that enough for Hronek? Too much?

2/10. We give A LOT of value for someone we can just sign in free agency. Would be much smarter to just sign our own player in free agency and keep or use those assets on things you can’t readily get for nothing but cap space.

If he was 6’4 and banged I would do that trade in a heartbeat though. But he’s not what we’re missing. We need a thoroughbred.

I was concerned about Hronkek's late season drop off in play along with his attitude at the end of the season pressers.

That's a lot to give up for him.
I believe he had a shoulder injury for the last few months of the season.

Hronek has arbitration rights so I don’t think it would be worth it to get Vancouver out of a potential contractual jam, playing as fresh first round pick for the privilege.

For one Hronek is an RFA. For two, Liljgren and Robertson just aren't super valuable at this point.

I like Hronek, he's not the answer in TO, and that package is pretty fair value

It's an overpayment that's unjustified by our circumstances: 1/10

Sure the value in a vacuum is fair but Hronek is not what we need at all. And look what our 28th pick from just last year is doing.

And sorry I didn’t mean we could sign him specifically I meant there are always players just like him in UFA.

We've been burned too many times recently by giving away 1st round picks for decent at best guys who run away after one year. Hopefully the Dubas Disaster Days are over - let's not revive them.

He's not that good - Lily + Robertson is closer to value.

That's a two or three out of ten for me.

Vancouver would be moving on from him because of his price tag, no? Do we have the space rti pay him? How much? $7M. Why not sign Skjei? Or Roy, or Montour and save the assets?

While there are similar options available in free agency (some might even be better), all of them are older. Hronek is 26 (27 in November) and the youngest player you named there is 29.

Any deal with a player that age has the potential to age poorly. Hronek being younger avoids that risk.

The assets spent are preferable currency, at least in my opinion. Cowan's progress is an anomoly - we can’t expect another player like that. Lilly’s progress has stagnated and just not good enough. Robertson is the odd man out on a deep LW.

Nic Roy is a year older and isnt smaller than Rielly.

I don't mind giving up Lily and Robertson or even the 1st. It's just the giving all of that up for a guy with question marks, such as:

Why is he being made available by Vancouver?

How much to resign him? AAV and term?

Why did Detroit give up on him last year

What about the poor attitude scuttlebutt?

I ampl particularly interested in your thought on what contract is required to lock him up.

I’ll put it this way, I’d rather do this deal than sign Pesce to a seven-year deal on July 1st.
I hope we steer clear of a lengthy commitment to Pesce as well. He's on the downside and I don't think we should be the team to compensate him financially for the sweet deal Carolina enjoyed.

As for the Hronek proposal a 3/10 sounds about right but without knowing what his expected cap hit will be it could look better.
