Rate Staios SO Far

I think he’s done a really good job with what he was given. Sure it’s great to think the barometer is to become a contender right away or to see something incredible but the reality is that was not going to happen. In my books he’s easily an A for what he’s done so far.

Amadio, Perron, Jensen, Ullmark, Cousins have all been great additions to the team and have all made a positive impact.

Getting out from the Korpisalo contract while acquiring Ullmark was tidy work. Making that deal and having the confidence that he could get Ullmark signed was impressive.

I love Josh Norris but moving him with the injury history and acquiring Cozens and a 2nd rounder was really incredible work. You can think whatever you want about Cozens and this is a deal you make every single time.

Travis Green has done a real good job with the players, the style of play, commitment to defense, and keeping guys accountable.

The only move I question is the Zetterlund move which looked like a great deal off the hop. I understand why the deal was made and the limitations Staios had to manage cap wise to improve the team at the deadline so it’s definitely not a deal I would be mad about. I’m definitely way higher than others on Ostapchuk but it wasn’t a bad trade all in all.

After that he signed Greig and Matinpalo to good deals. Keeping Greig at 4 years where he’s still an RFA is real good positioning for the team going forward.

Big summer ahead with some interesting decisions to make and opportunities to improve the team. I am fully confident with him. Everything is thought out and calculated and that’s what you love to see. Won’t always work out perfectly but he’s doing everything to improve the team and it’s easy to understand his thought process … all you can ask for.

Well, under Staois as GM we got into the playoffs for the 1st time in yrs & it could be that the players finally matured or Green got them playing winning hockey, either way Staois was responsible for Green & bringing in several vets that seem to fit the team identity. This off season will be interesting free agency & how he handles the draft with the current scouting staff, they definitely need to make a few tweaks.

I agree with your assessment. I think Staois has done a good job overall so far.

Next year will interesting. The bar will be set higher now that they made into the playoffs this season. Making it into the 2nd round would seem like the natural progressive goal.

I really enjoy his measured responses and behaviour. He exudes stability and thoughtfulness which are two things this organization needs.

I loved reading the interview that described Andlauer as being in the locker room after wins and losses with a dip and a beer, cheering or consoling his guys, watching every game, and how much the players love the guy, while Steve is more quiet and behaves more like the guy who has to make all of the tough decisions, but in a respectful manner. Approachable but not a cheerleader.

Steady Steve.

Really neat little snippets from the players.

Obviously adding savvy Steve to his resume will be important

Agreed. I wonder how much Sean Tierney has played into this.

"dip" ?

Staios wanted to give him an opportunity to explore other opportunities in prime hiring season prior to his contract expiring. A real courtesy knowing that he wouldn't be a fit here in Ottawa.
Bowness seems to be much like Staios: quiet, business-like. That would seem to be a "fit" personality wise; however, I am not close to the team and do not have any insider info.

If there's one under the radar trade I will criticize Staios for, it's the 4th rounder and Järventie for Bourgault. Edmonton flipped that 4th for Podkolzin, and I'm pretty sure the Canucks would gladly have traded Podkolzin for a 4th, considering we aren't in their division. Podkolzin would have been an excellent 4th liner for us.

The drafting of Jarventie was surprising given the others that were available. Same for the drafting of Boucher. Some bizarre choices by our scouting force.

Of course Peterka was there and he himself was shocked and disappointed that the Sens didn't draft him to play with Jim.

But regardless, Staios wasn't part of org at the time. He should have traded the 4th for Podkolzin instead of Bourgault.
