So, like, I'm just a simple Habs fan who barely spends any time watching the West. I hold no animus towards the Flames. But isn't Andersson supposed to be really good? Yes, whatever, plus/minus blah blah lol flawed stat, but if your teammate is +47 compared to you, maybe you suck. Is that a historic gap? Andersson is tied for 4th worst +/- in the league, alongside the likes of Celebrini. The next worse Flames D is Kevin Bahl, at -7. So Flames fans, what's the dilly?

He's just very nonchalant in his play. He started fantastic, and I think after the scoring woes and all, he kinda just gave up. I like him, but I'd rather have traded him retained this deadline for a massive haul when you saw what a lot of players were going for.

In 85-85 Gretzky was +98. His teammate Kevin Mclelland was -11.

They aren’t good but fans horribly overrate former 1st round picks who are still under the age of 25.

Frost is good but has had no luck and seems like he doesn't have that finishing touch. Farabee is average, not good but not bad. That said it's still early, took 2 years for Huberdeau to hit stride after being traded.

Andersson was never a stud d-man in his own zone (he's alright) and he hasn't been putting up the points this year because no one can score. He's an excellent #3, or a solid #2 if he has a really good partner, him and Hanifin were a fantastic pairing for example.

Weegar is massively underrated though, he should have been at the 4 Nations for Canada. Guy is a stud and a warrior for us.

Also Andersson has faced higher quality of competition and more defensive deployments, and for a month he played those harder minutes without Bahl

Andersson rocking that .962 on ice PDO, and .891 save percentage at even strength.

Weegar at a far more normal .993 with a .902 save percentage at EV.

Weegar's expected numbers are better across the board of course, but some bad luck making Andersson look worse than he probably is. Andersson has a little under 46% of the High Danger opportunities, but is getting outscored 47-21. Weegar has a little over 48% of the high danger opportunities, but he's actually outscoring opponents on ice 31-21.

Andersson is a -13 in expected goal share, but is a -30.
Weegar is a -5 in expected goal share, but is a +10.

I remember arguing with a habs fan who really wanted him earlier this season. Told him he's basically mike matheson with worst skating, didn't believe me 🤷‍♂️
It is a bad stylistic comparison. Matheson’s entire game is built around being one of the best skaters in the league. Andersson’s skating is far from a strength. Andersson is also gritty and kind of a pest.

I think this sums it up well. The reality is that luck has a whole lot more to do with +/- than any one player’s individual contributions.

Rasmus Andersson has always been a riverboat gambler. He only fares as well as the team around him.

Flames fans always overrate their defencemen and so it's no surprise outside fans don't hear anything about how subpar his defense ability is.

The Andersson-Hanifin pairing got absolutely feasted on during the Flames-Oilers playoff series. I think because Flames fans knew Hanifin had one foot out the door anyway, they managed to convince themselves that Hanifin was the bigger problem on that pairing. They weren't right.

Maybe watch your opponents more Rasmus ......

Flames are a weird team this year. Whole team has a -23 differential but are somehow still alive in the wildcard race

Andersson was +30 back in '22

Ras really hasn't been very good this year but to be fair to him the load the Flames have put on him and Weegar has been extreme. He doesn't skate well enough to be playing 24 minutes a night. Would not surprise me if they reveal he's been playing through some injuries since Christmas too.
