Rantanen vs Necas points race to end of season.

1) Who’s faulting Rantanen? He deservedly gets shit for how he carried himself, but he was within his rights to make his choice not to sign.
1. CAR management should have checked if Rantanen wanted to re-sign in Carolina prior to the trade.

2. Rantanen by all accounts wanted to re-sign in Colorado, but it was never agreed to any amount, which it seems that Colorado offered contract below market, as makes no sense that Rantanen supposedly said no to similar to what he got in the end in Dallas.

3. Necas from the rumors probably didn't want to re-sign in Carolina. CAR traded him away for what they thought would be an upgrade, didn't work out, they flipped Rantanen for a nice package to Dallas.

4. COL made their bed by not just coming to an agreement and then subsequently trading Rantanen a good while before the deadline. Got to be said this is on Rantanen too, if they wanted to come to agreement he could have been more forward on it. In the end they went for trading out more cap, vs. depth quality and at least this year lost out, but could be a long term win for even all parties in these two trades.

Carolina wasn’t given permission to discuss with Rantanen or his representation prior to the trade. They were told via Colorado that he was open to re-signing talks.

That's not disappearing. That is top 3 in scoring for his team.

This argument is fair, but also has to be coupled with the fact that he had very little to do with the scoring on 3 of his assists.

Anyone skating with MacKinnon and Makar is going to pick up points just by being the guy to pass the puck in their direction, which is largely what happened for Necas in this series. His value-add beyond those passive assists wasn’t great.

GM could ask agent to ask player etc...this is not hard to do.
Lol - no you can’t. That’s literally the definition of tampering. You can’t talk to an agent about a player unless you’re given permission. You’re not even allowed to make public remarks or speculate about a player who’s not on your team.

Like if Rantanen never got traded from the Avs, and at the deadline a reporter asked another GM about him as a target in free agency they couldn’t say anything other than ‘that’s a great player who would be a solid addition to any team’ or ‘we will explore all options to improve our team in free agency’

Rantanen wanted to sign in Colorado, that is undisputed fact. Negotations were cut surprisingly short.

Reading this makes me think the Canes, who have a history of being spiteful, traded Rantanen to Dallas because they felt mislead by the Avs.

Rantanen gave 4 team options for the Canes to trade him to and he would re-sign with if they were to offer the 8 x 12m type deal. Florida, Toronto, Edmonton, Dallas.

Never heard anything about Florida and Edmonton. Toronto and Carolina went back and forth but Dallas offer blew Toronto's away.

I'm sure the Canes also felt better about trading him out west overall vs. keeping him in the East and potentially facing him this year in the playoffs and for the next 8 years.

Not sure if this true or not but Kypreos reported of a similar sentiment from Carolinas management earlier during the whole thing:

However, Kypreos revealed, Carolina opted to send Rantanen to a Western Conference team in the Dallas Stars to avoid the possibility of facing him in the playoffs had they traded him to Toronto.

Ya I remember hearing that as well on his show Kyper and Bourne. It's hard to trust Kyper's reporting of the Leafs. He has sources in the org but the way he slants things a fair bit. In that same segment he was saying that Carolina sent Rants to Dallas because of the reason you mentioned and turned down the better offer in the process.

Their offer was Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan, along with two first-round draft picks

Then analysts and insiders came on the segment afterwards and they were all like 'The Dallas offer was decidedly better. Every GM would have chosen it over the Leafs.'

Canes wanted Marner and he wouldn't waive. Then they asked for Knies and Leafs said no.

Two late first are two late firsts. Fraser Minten is not a prospect the Canes would care about. Easton Cowan is fine but not blue chip. Stankoven is better now and likely later, plus Dallas gave 2 x 3rds, and then on top of that it sends him out west and gives an FU to Colorado.

Not that Carolina ultimately did that poorly in all of it, but maybe they should have seen that for the gigantic red flag it is.

Team is making a monumental change to their core but they won't even let you talk to the guy they're trading?

Don't disagree at all. It was a huge gamble and while Carolina ended up doing well in the end, the twists and turns along the way and the potential for it to completely blow up were always a possibility.

They went for it and hoped for the best but were flying blind without much of a plan or contingencies. They stuck the landing but could have gotten completely f***ed.

Necas should be able to outscore Rantanen as he already scored more with lesser players with Carolina and Rantanen had a lot of empty net points which he won't get with Carolina.

My concern for the Avs is that Necas will prove to be even better player than Rantanen (which already seems to be the consensus among Avs fans) and then they have to pay him 12M+ and it'll hurt their depth going forward. Obviously you pay the man what he's worth as he can drive his own line unlike Rantanen but it's still a lot of money to tie up when you have MacKinnon and Makar making a lot of money.
Do you still agree with this statement? Although Rants has couple empty netters during these playoffs so without those he wouldn't be the top scorer currently.

Also he is playing with Granlund and can't drive his own line. Huberdeau 2.0?

Rantanen is an absolute honey badger: the more you poke him the better he plays and never plays soft if there is physical play to be done. I've heard a good deal of this side of him through someone who trains with him.

We really should bring up all the posts post Avs trade of Rantanen coasting/sucking and the same for the first 4 games of Round 1. Dude is an elite talent and Im not shocked at all to see this. Obviously some more consistency would be nice.
