Rantanen vs Necas points race to end of season.

Yeah our team hasn't had a one-timer threat in ages so we don't know how to set those up anyways, which is a shame

Definitely going to have to use him down low more. Teams have certainly been cheating to his side a lot since we got him
His choke up tip goal thing is nasty and one of the few in the league who can do it. Also behind the net, Id argue he is one of the best passers from there specifically. But captain obvious will try to use his one timer, which the Avs will be ready for.

Watched a lot of the first game and thought Rantanen was one of the better players for Dallas, even though he didn't score. Looked dangerous. Didn't watch last night's game as I was working.

Back to Taylor Hall, what amazes me about him is his defensive game. Rod has some serious standards for his forwards to contribute defensively: backchecking fast, playing man to man, sticks in lanes. He demands a big work ethic on every shift. I had always thought of Hall as some kind of lazy offensive phenom in his later years, but he really bought in on day 1. He does the little things right. His speed is still there. He alone is much more impactful for our system than Rantanen was, surprisingly.

Stankoven won't get 2G every game, but it's nice to have someone who can bury shots on that line. Martinook and Staal will shut down whatever they see. They also have a penchant for setting up 6-7 grade A scoring chances a night and just absolutely flubbing it. Jarvis did and now Stankoven is wiring those chances home that Marty and Staal never could. Even when his goal scoring cools down, he'll still be a great player for us if he can play well defensively. Stankoven, Jackson Blake, and eventually Nikishin will keep our window open for a little while.

Add Morrow to the list too. With Burns and Orlov likely moving on in the offseason the Canes average age will drop quite a bit and then again in two years after Staal and Martinook contracts are up

Really stoked for Stank, he seems to be fitting in nicely with Carolina and their group.

Thought Rantanen played pretty well last night for the most part, especially once he got put with Hintz & Granlund. I think that line will be good.

Necas has been quiet for sure. Probably the type of guy we will notice more on Avs home ice maybe when they're able to open the game up a bit more

Until these playoffs the Denver duo of Rantanen and MacKinnon had very similar playoff stats, PPGs of 1.25 and 1.30, respectively. Rantanen even had one assist more than Mack the playmaker even though he had fewer GP. That 0.05 difference in PPG has already almost doubled to 0.09 in just two games. Rantanen sure is an interesting case in the hypothetical "product of teammate X" category. The trade is still so recent that I'm not expecting him to score a point per game these playoffs but next season he's gonna have to start producing. This is one of the most glaring codependencies of a perceived borderline superstar status player of modern NHL. Who else is close, Huberdeau?

Just wanted to point out something. Joe Pavelski played 13 seasons in San Jose and got traded to Dallas for the remainder of his career.

His ppg of the last three seasons in San Jose:
  • 0,83
  • 0,8
  • 0,85
His ppg of the first season in Dallas:
  • 0,46
His ppg of the next three seasons in Dallas:
  • 0,91
  • 0,98
  • 0,93

DeBoer said it took Pavelski almost a full year to feel comfortable on the ice with Dallas and you can clearly see it from his numbers.

When you think abou the fact that Rantanen played 10 years with the Avs and got accustomed to certain chemistry, playstyles and friendships I think it's fair to say what he is going through is only natural. I don't think it would be suprising if it took him until next season to fully figure things out and to feel comfortable again on the ice and off the ice.

Considering all that his ppg drop from the 1,3 of the last three seasons with the Avs to the 0,9 from the first 20 games with Dallas isn't bad.

I wouldn't make any definitive conclusions from this season alone.

That's a very pertinent counter example you came up with there, thanks. We'll see how things shape out!
It's kinda funny though since my comment may look like a direct reply to yours but I actually wrote and posted that before I saw your comment. Soon after I posted it I read yours and realized you kinda adressed it from a similar point of view.

But yeah will be interesting to see how all this plays out during the next season!

I haven’t been thrilled with Necas for a couple weeks. He has a reputation as going quiet in the playoffs. Haven’t been impressed. The avs lack scoring tough

Rantanen is an elite finisher not a play driver.
Mikko CAN be an elite play driver, it all just depends on how much he feels like moving his feet. Last night he was working hard and created a ton of chances. Easily could have had 3 or 4 points had some things gone differently. When he wants to be he's close to unstoppable...well until he inevitably falls down.

Avs are regretting trading Rantanen and galaxy braining it once again. Should have never traded Byram either. This core won’t win anymore. It’s over. Also Necas is pretty bad, don’t know why anyone would trade for him especially one of your best players

Rantanen 3gp 0g 1a -3
Necas 3gp 0g 1a +0

Rantanen hasn't been a difference maker lol.

You should probably watch the games

Game 1 was bad, games 2 and 3 you notice him every shift

+ for all the adv stats lovers he was dominating in game 3
You're right, I didn't watch. I'm just going off of the counting stats as impact. I interpreted his comment as meaning that they regret the trade because Rantanen's play was resulting in positive outcomes for Dallas that were making a difference in the series.

Here's the stat card for G3 for Dallas. Not sure how exactly these stats are counted but as you can see Rantanen did pretty well. So definitely the scoreboard is not the only indicator of impact on game:

His play hasn’t helped Dallas?

Whoa, do you work at ESPN?

They brought up Rantanen's playoff numbers, compared to Necas/Drury/Stankoven, constantly last night.

And then, just for good measure, plastered them all over the screen again during the second intermission - following an interview with Mikko Rantanen.

Got so annoying even PK Subban called them out on it, and he was on the panel.

FWIW Rantanen had an exceptional game even before the chip play for the OT winner. Think he led the team in shots and was buzzing all night. Won't be long before he pots one.

Rantanen has been the best player on the Ice last couple of games with Lindell. Rolling over everybody on the puck battles in the corners.

Of course it should eventually translate on a score sheet to be more meaningful but tilting the ice almost every shift is very important as well for the momentum

Colorado needed Rantanen to win another cup, not Necas, there is a reason why the Carolina board couldn’t stand him each year during the yoffs
