Rantanen vs Necas points race to end of season.

Rantanen likes to hide in soft areas of the ice. When someone collects the puck or draws attention from him is when he is at his best, it’s amazing how he can be left alone as much as he does considering he has one of the best shots in the game imo. He will surely burn us for a few this series. The Dallas pp looked very dangerous yesterday and that’s where I am concerned about him the most.

Stars haven't figured out how to use him yet on the PP. They've spent 2 months failing to set him up for shots more than 2-3 times total. It's rough to watch. They have no clue how to get the puck to him for a chance on goal

That’s why I’m for Granlund on Rantanen’s line. He is smart and a pass first guy.
If you call it the 3rd or 2nd line doesn’t matter. It’s about purpose.

Stankoven with 2 goals in the first playoff game definitely helps ease the pain of how all of this went down for the Canes this year.

He had 9 points in 11 games last playoffs for them. He's already 1 for 1 this playoff.
As a long-time Canes season ticket holder I've watched him since arriving in the NHL.

His career playoff stats are below. Even LY, when he contributed beyond his previous sub-par norm, his +/- was meh. That's because Necas continued his regular season "knack" of being too loose with the puck which contributed to opposing team's goals. I'd add, he is probably the least physical big player I've ever seen and that's a big negative in the playoffs.

Now, I was not in favor of trading him because the Canes have a lot of workhorses in their lineup that could absorb Necas' electric style of play. As well, perhaps he finally understood the necessity to be better with the puck.

But.....I'm happy for him and based on early returns, I feel that the trade return of Stankoven plus 2 first round picks (plus Hall & Jankowski) were a great return for Necas. Now, if only Necas had agreed to a Columbus trade/extended contract, then Canes would now have Demidov. This year would not be as good without Stankoven but future would arguably been even much better then we are trending now.

I agree his career playoff history has been 'meh'. But I think he's turned a corner in that regard. I actually think he turned a corner in every regard. Guess we'll see in playoffs and next season if this was a blip or if this is the new normal.

We got a good look at playoff Rants the other night - he was getting up off his ass and skating back to his own zone at half speed when Toews scored to put the game away
Canes fans had not seen MR much before being traded.

What amazed many of us was that his skating was not great. It reminded us of first year Kotkaniemi consistently falling down and not with a lot of speed (Kotkaniemi btw has significantly improved his skating). We didn't know whether that was who he was or whether he was just dogging it.

Stankoven is a perfect fit in Carolina's system. 7 goals 11 points in 20 games in Carolina. He reminds me of a smaller Jarvis.

And Hall had 2 assists in game 1. He's 2nd on the Canes in scoring since early March, and has 17 points in his last 18 games.

They are a much more balanced team now then they were before the big trade IMO.

He fits our style like a glove. As you said, he plays a lot like Jarvis, which allows us to put him on the Staal line, and let Jarvis get top line minutes. And Jarvis looked like a man possessed out there yesterday. He a couple sequences that really showed how much of a complete game he is developing defensively and offensively. Making a very strong case of being our most talented player already.

Why was Carolina so insistent on selling Necas ? I didn't want Vancouver to trade for him because the whole thing had pump and dump vibes.
He wanted out, and both parties felt he didn't fit the style of the team

Saying he was traded for lack of playoff success is post hoc rationalizing, he wasn't any different than the Necas we saw in the regular season.

Us Avs' fans call him Bambi for a reason. He falls down almost every shifts.

He will be best used behind for passing/around the net for tips. If they are planning a mirror Ovi one timer thing, it wont work as often as it should and 100000% wont against the Avs; they know what is coming.

Yeah our team hasn't had a one-timer threat in ages so we don't know how to set those up anyways, which is a shame

Definitely going to have to use him down low more. Teams have certainly been cheating to his side a lot since we got him
