Rantanen was again the best player of the Stars team in last nights game:
Rantanen has always been a playmaker first, scorer second type of player. He has even acknowledged this himself in interviews and one anomalous season a few years ago doesn't change the fact. Rantanen has always scored goals in clusters and I think it will take some time before he even gets similar chances to score goals as he had in Colorado, if ever. Well, maybe when Dallas gets their #1D back to join the rushes and QB the powerplay.
But it's true Rantanen's playmaking abilities have shown the past few games. He could've easily had even more points from his his assists. Now it's just 2+6 for the past 5 games, but I don't think he minds it as long as the Stars maintain their winning streak.
One things to keep in mind about Rantanen's production with Dallas is that he doesn't get or need the same amount of ice time as he did with Colorado. Dallas is so deep they roll their lines and don't have to overuse anybody. Ranatanen was a 20+ minute guy for years, with 22 minutes being the norm the past few. He's sitting at 18.5 with Dallas. If you adjust for ice time, his current PPG pace in Dallas is his usual ~100 point pace in Colorado. He's off to a fine start.

Yeah his playmaking has really surprised me. Never really noticed it when I'd watch Colorado cause I was always paying attention to MacKinnon & Makar setting him up for goals rather than vice versa.
He's easily the best playmaker on the team now. Feels like every game he's setting up 3-4 fantastic opportunities. His linemates have choked a shocking amount, perhaps surprised to see the pass make it's way to them lol. Never seen Robertson choke shots the way he has off Rantanen setups.
His two-way game has also impressed me. It was rough too start in Dallas prior to him learning how the team defends but he's been very responsible in his own end and has made some big plays. Beautiful defensive play last night that led to the Hintz 3 on 1 goal
It'll be even more fun once the team figures out how to get the puck to him on the PP/create some space for him over there. Teams have been shadowing him on the PP

And DeBoer won't hesitate to give other guys having good games an opportunity. Started the 2nd PP unit over the 1st a couple of times yesterday. Also was taking the Rantanen trio off the ice for offensive zone faceoffs since they had a slower start to the game. Very common to see him take the top PP unit off the ice after 30-40 seconds if they can't get going right away
It's a big reason why no single Star has crazy production. Going forward though I'm not sure they'll be able to keep this depth so he and others will be probably relied on a lot more in future years. Especially if we lose Duchene (maybe) & Granlund (likely) this offseason
They don't need to force the offense through him so yeah it's exactly like you mentioned.

Did my final update. It was close. Damn close.
It got less interesting once another trade happened. Then following Hall, Stank, Drury etc. Got a bit complicated.
They do play each other in playoffs so that will be much easier to track.haha

You really couldn't ask for more of a direct comparison. They are literally going to play on the opposite side of the red line from each other. Line 1 vs Line 1.

Do the Canes have any east-west guys? I don’t think he fit in to how they play. He sure looks great in the Avs system though. Rantanen just looks list to me. But that might be a function of his game. He’s more of a down low player. That kind of game takes time to mesh with new teammates.

Rantanen likes to hide in soft areas of the ice. When someone collects the puck or draws attention from him is when he is at his best, it’s amazing how he can be left alone as much as he does considering he has one of the best shots in the game imo. He will surely burn us for a few this series. The Dallas pp looked very dangerous yesterday and that’s where I am concerned about him the most.
