The agent probably screwed him. He has said multiple times that he was under the impression that he'd be taking a paycut in order to stay with the team. I don't think that was being communicated between the two parties.

Colorado were also probably looking at Necas as a piece that would fit, and one they could afford while still leaving plenty of room for other contracts. They would've been more hesitant to pull the trigger if they didn't think that Necas could be a guy to replace Rantanen's production. There was obviously a lot of faith in him by the management, and so far it looks like they're right.
Exactly. Well said. Even in a best case scenario, would you want rants at 12 mil next year or necas at 6.5 if you generously projected rants a 90-100 pt player and under projected necas 70 pts. And that’s a worse case scenario for the avs, who also got a good bottom 6 center with a FO % of 58.

He still can come back and bend the knee to Lord Sakic

It's like people haven't watched the Avs, ever...
Actually, he should fire his agent, hire a new one with the directive to see if the Avs can shed a couple of bucks... and with the rising cap... agree to an 11.5 x 7 deal as a UFA this summer. Let the agents take a fall as they should and mend fences.

Rantanen especially contributes with his physical presence. He doesn’t need to score to help his club win.
I….. but….. you see……

This is just not accurate at all lol. I question how much you have watched Mikko Rantanen.

Not saying he is a poor player, far from it. But outside of cross checks and being a physically large player, he is very much not a physical presence.

One nice thing about become a Avs follower is watching more of MacK and Makar.. they really are beautiful to watch!
Indeed. Imho, they're the best 1-2 combo in the NHL. If I were starting a team from scratch, I'd take them over...

McDavid & Draisaitl
Barkov & Tkachuk
Q. Hughes & Pettersson
Matthews & Marner
Kucherov & Hedman

An elite no. 1 centerman and an elite (likely the best) defenseman... both in their prime with a Cup on their resume. Can't beat that.

That would be nice. Good idea.

I somewhat agree but need to point out that Necas's .ppg this season went down after joining the Avs.
1.12 with Carolina, 1.0 now with Colorado. If he puts up 1 point in the third period tonight he is above his Carolina average.
Its still very early so things can change very fast but either way its very interesting to see how theyll adapt and how things will work out.
Its like an ongoing story thats interesting to follow but to me it really seems like Rantanen is struggling right now because Carolinas system is so much stricter than Colorados and even when he does adapt I dont think he'll score as much as he did in Colorado.

It'd have to be a McDavid Hughes type combo to be honest. I'm an Oil fan so I love McDrai but I'd rather the elite D and F too.

The most interesting part of this trade is definitely how it helps up see how much different systems and what players you play with affects your production.

Well the thing I always wondered right after is people questioning if someone who skates a million times better and works all over the ice much harder than Rantanen would be difficult to mesh with MacKinnon...

I've also heard that they are all sick with some virus. Maybe he just arrived at the worst possible time? I've enjoyed the Canes a lot over the years and find them very entertaining to be honest.

Yeah theyre a great team but they play a different style, theyre defensively focused and they dont have superstars like Mackinnon and Makar. I feel like even when everythings clicking over there, Rantanen probably wont be putting up 100 point seasons.

Another interesting thing is usage, Rantanen and Necas have swapped ice time basically.
Necas with Carolina: 18:05 per game.
Necas with Colorado: 22:43 per game
Rantanen with Colorado: 22:30
Rantanen with Carolina: 19:41

Carolina just spreads it out more.

Which is funny because Necas wanted more ice time and that was a cricisim of his. The more minutes don't seem to be tiring him out at all.lol

And there’s his 3rd period point…
