Rantanen vs Necas points race to end of season.

What am I missing? When did Necas already outscore him?

Colorado has atrocious depth. Their 4-6 defensemen are worse than what tank teams throw out in those slots. It's hard to see them as a real Stanley Cup contender. MacKinnon and Makar are playing out of their minds this season and with minutes like it's the Stanley Cup Finals and they're.. +5 as a team.
The only reason they finally won the cup a few years ago was because they had a ton of depth that really propelled them over the hump. But then they lost it all in the summer and haven't come close to it again. They are basically right back where they started all those years before. A top heavy team with holes every where else. There's a reason why they've gotten bounced the last few years in the first round and second rounds. MacKinnon and Makar are not enough.

1st empty net points dont count. Then they do. Now they dont. Make your damn minds up.

From Rantanen? I have to disagree. Both are offensive Dynamos and neither is a Selke candidate. I have yet to see one stat to suggest Rants is that much better than Necas defensively. I can find plenty for the offensive end of things though.
Mikko can actually play pretty good defence when he puts the effort in. I agree he’s not a selke candidate, but the last two years I feel like a lot of it is just lack of effort

shocking. The team who managed to get depth won the cup one year. Please feed more of your infinite hockey wisdom to us.

I haven't followed him too closely, but I've come to the same conclusion. He does have good defensive skills, but since he isnt the fastest forward and likes to go deep he is and will be late vs. rush plays.

Necas has a big lead at the moment, but I'm sure Canes don't mind that much as long as they keep winning games. They are looking like the better team at the moment. Necas has had some sick passes though.

Fans want clear Ws; we’re crazy like that. My team’s GM could beat up your team’s GM energy.

Organizations really shouldn’t care about the performance of what they’re trading away. Focus on what you’re doing.

Carolina’s core took 6 cracks at it and didn’t get over the hump. A big swing was justified. Have to give up something to get something big.

Rants 2gp - 1A
Necas 3gp - 4A
I’m a huge Necas fan but his observed weaknesses are shying away from physicality (rarely drives to dirty areas which is important in playoff hockey…he does the drive into zone with speed 10-15x a game but then stops and twirls every time), quite often makes dangerous cross ice passes to the opponent and often ignores his defensive responsibilities (biggest itch for RBA over the years). He had improved the last 2 years but it will be interesting to see if he falls back without RBA to hound him on those responsibilities. Still, I didn’t want the Canes to trade him when much of the fan base turned on him LY.

Btw:
I’d add the following to the stats:
Necas: 1W 2L -4
Rants: 1W 1OTL +2

But let me just dump on him real quick and then post team stats
Ah, my posting history on Necas is pretty extensive and positive (I’ve seen him play every game since he has been a Cane and live at home games…as an Avs fan, have you?).

Player contributions doesn’t matter to team success?

-4 ring a bell re: possible defensive shortcomings?

You will see….

But let me just dump on him real quick and then post team stats
It's not a dump on him... Necas is a Jekyll and Hyde type player in that he is absolutely excellent about creating offense and he goes about it in a very specific Martin Necas way but he is the furthest thing from a complete hockey player. It's not that he's bad at other parts of the game exactly (defense, physicality) they just literally do not register in his brain. Like all he thinks about it getting the puck and skating with it into the offensive zone.

Canes biggest issue in the playoffs has been goal scoring in later rounds. Aho is just about the only one of the big guns who has produced consistently there. Necas up until last year had very underwhelming runs because his brand of hockey and the playoffs and how the Canes play did not mix. Maybe on a more run and run team like the Avs that will work out better but there is a reason why Necas + / - ends up where it does when the team overall has very good goal differentials each year.

Necas was a + 4 while having more points combined than his most common linemates Kotkaniemi and Robinson while each of them has a +/- of +10 and +13. It's been 6 years now but please do not misunderstand. Canes fans love Necas and know what he is capable and ideally never wanted to let him go but it was only for the right big fish player they would do it. He is probably the most offensively gifted player that the Hurricanes org has ever had. He just plays his own way... and he's really good at it but there are gaps there as well that may never go away.

Rants is a better fit for us and hopefully we can retain him. He and Svech on a line together is scary and if they have offensive chemistry like they showed last night it will be huge in unlocking Andrei's potential as he is a player who can contribute more but hasn't found a running mate with consistency in Carolina. Aho can and will play and produce with anyone. I'm sure we will get some Finn on Finn action there but having two dynamic scoring lines and then allowing the 3rd and 4th lines to focus on what they do will be huge for us.

Yeah he does not respond well to defenses clamping down, which is not a great thing once you hit the stretch run and the playoffs. And enough of our competition in the East has seen him enough times to know how to play him defensively, which is to give him a small pocket in the offensive zone to skate into, and then smother him. If you give him space, he'll make you pay. If you take that space away, he tries to stickhandle through you, and it rarely works in his favor.

Well thank goodness you guys are here to continually bring up +/- then! Nuance!
Jesus... what's your problem man. We aren't even shitting on Necas. He's going to rack up points for you but you don't think scoring 4 points in 3 games and being a -4 is a bit curious? Like everything is all about context.

There's people in here ripping apart Rants and MacKinnon for empty net points and you don't see us losing our minds over that.

What's got you thinking I have a problem or something?

I watched the games. I have the context. What's silly is you acting like +/- is context lol
