Preface:
Colorado should keep Rantanen and I think Rantanen will stay in Colorado.

The remainder is a thought exercise based on the reports he wants lots of dollars.

Question to you:
Rantanen fits a hole in stl’s depth chart, not so much cap structure.

That being said, if this inter division trade went down next week. What does it look like? Can it happen?

Broad details:

Rantanen is at 9.25

Stl has ~3 mil cap space however has performance bonuses due to Suter as well as some uncertainty (publicly) about LTIR timeframes. Real cap space is probably 1.2 mil.

FWIW and not that he has to be part of it; but Kyrou has no trade protection rn and is 8.125aav.

Why stl?

We have a hole and Rantanen’s gigantic self fills the hole. Robert Thomas meet your new partner in crime may you both be blessed with 100 point seasons.

Stl would be buying, therefore likely overpaying. We’d also overpay due to inter division.

Stl has a lot of stuff we can offer. A lot.

Why Col?

I have no clue what they want to do. I just want a gigantic sniper for Thomas and I would not be shy with what I would offer.

Why Rantanen?

For all I know he may as well have 0 desire to sign here. Assuming obviously this is not a rental situation. A contract would occur the day of the trade.

This would look like a full valued hockey trade and stl overpay despite the expiring Rantanen. It would be valued as if he were controlled.

1)We need a 2C and defense not a winger.
2) Col will want atleast a third round pick for him. Maybe even a second.

8 years ago:

0 is the number of people who predicted Colorado would trade their 1C to Nashville.

Is this the modern equivalent of "hey the Oilers traded Gretzky, so literally any proposal is reasonable"?

And there were rumors at the time about Duchene and O'Reilly.

More along the lines of:

Colorado wonders if being too top heavy is bad then looks at the future with MacKinnon, Rantanen, and Makar and decides it doesn’t want that cap structure. Nobody would decide they don’t want Rantanen.

Everybody would resign Rantanen. He’s not resigned yet. Until he is it’s fair game imo. It’s not wild to speculate on expiring guys.

Your only option is he makes it to unrestricted free agency and you offer him a mega-$$$ max contract and he picks St. Louis over a bevy of other teams bidding.

The Avs aren’t going to trade him.

Don’t think the Avs move him but I’m in the camp that’s ok with it as long as we get legit piece(s) back. Don’t care if it’s in division or out of conference, just get the absolute best value you can if he’s moved.

Not sure what Stl has on offer, but we drastically need smart depth that can make life hard for opposing goalies. Players that play with pace and are reliable at both ends.

Also, quality depth defence for the third pairing, personal preference of size and decent defence/transition.

No interest in picks/ prospects, in fact I’d be ok with outside trades involving ours or adding them to Rantanen in a blockbuster.

That’s my view anyways.

Do you guys typically post negative stuff with no content?

When I see something I don’t like I just click on then next one. It seems silly to like…spend the time to flame some stranger. Speculating about an expiring ufa is fair game imo.

You haven't justified this at all from one team's perspective, and you're admittedly a fan of the other team involved.

I'm still here because I'm trying to decide if there's any meat on the bone worth saving or if I need to put the thread out of its misery.

You could help your case by helping with the Colorado value case, or you could complain about me being here on a board where I'm supposed to be here. Your call.

I don’t mean to like start a debate,

If I’m the avs there is 0 chance I let him get to ufa.

Either I know I can meet him when I need to or I’ve decided I can’t do it and I’m not letting that walk free.

I used bold?

Just kill it mate, you can’t have this type of toxic behavior sit here. It’s all good.

So the section above in bold thats says “Question to you”. I don’t know what they want. I don’t deep dive every team. It If I post some garbage that I don’t know about it’s worse than just saying I don’t know what do you think?

I don’t really know what else to say.

It’ll be funny if it happens I’ll ping ya.

So why would St. Louis give up the world for a guy who can walk in a few months?

If the logic behind the question is “Rantanen won’t agree to terms with Colorado”, why is the follow-up then “but for this exercise he will do exactly that immediately after landing at the airport in St. Louis”?

St. Louis has a lot of nice pieces. Colorado isn’t trading Rantanen there. Save your pieces and take a stab in free agency if he makes it that far. That’s the avenue.
