On what planet does Carolina - who is trying to win a cup - trade rantanen to Florida.

Zero chance IMO.

If - and that’s a big if - Carolina moves him - it will be out west. Deal with the consequences of their decision if they meet in the final.

I don't think east-west matters as much as simply maximizing the return. I also don't think they're willing to come down much from the price they paid. I expect the preference still is to keep him.

If nobody comes close, I suspect the day after the TDL Carolina says "What number gets your name on this signature line today?" to Rantanen. Even if he decides he doesn't like the area, we can move him with term wherever he wants to go for more than a pittance offered at the 2025 TDL. The cap's going to explode over the next 3-5 years...pretty much any number today is a bargain by 2028.

I get wanting a guy like Lundell. I can’t see that happening from Florida’s point of view, especially with Bennett a pending UFA.

I do think your Verhaeghe + 1st + prospect could work as it opens cap space for Rantanen to extend if they go that route and Florida usually gets their guys signed for less than market value due to tax situation and being one of the top teams in the league.
Nah, that ain't it

I think this scenario is weird enough already that a little hockey trade could occur if there’s another fellow who’s about to expire and maybe was going to just be an internal rental too. I think the hurricanes would probably be more inclined to want an nhler yeah?

Ehlers plus for Rantanen would be fun. If the jets are gonna lose Ehlers this offseason or lose Rantanen this offseason then why not think about it, see if they could cram him into their group.

I dunno about Sam Bennett tho. I guess I always felt he’d just stay where he was.

In that case why wouldn't the Canes just keep Rants for the playoff run and sign Ehlers in the offseason? Doesn't make sense to downgrade before the playoffs unless the long-term payoff (++) is worth it

I think the idea is that you want him for a cup run. Getting him next year isn't so simple as just 'go out and buy him'. There's one in stock and he might not even be available to be 'bought' by the time free agency opens up. There's a supply and demand thing in place here

I think it depends on the offers. Canes have always been OK with letting free agents walk away if the price didn't make sense to them but this is a different case with the assets given up to acquire Mikko. If he indicates that he's going to market for the highest bidder then I think the Canes have to look at trading him for the best offer.
These 2 paragraphs seem at odds.

Why doesn't CAR want him for a Cup run? There's one in stock, and he's in their cupboard. If he indicates that he's going to market for the highest bidder, then why would CAR be like "Let's get rid of him" but another team be like "Let's pay CAR a ton for him"?

It's like CAR paid a lot for him but if he wants to go to UFA then they need to deal him instead of contend. But some other team should pay a lot for him and lose him for nothing.
