Value of: Rantanen to Florida

Rantanen's current cap hit is 4M ish, so Florida should be able to fit the cap hit in.

What would Florida give up to create the line of

Reinhart - Barkov - Rantanen
It would be assets that would make FLR a worse off contender for this season

You would need to toss in NHL players (Forsling/Ekblad/Verhaghe/Lundell) + picks/prospects (Samsok, any firsts they have)

You can try to come up with something but I highly doubt Florida has the moveable assets to make this work.

If Canes do put Mikko out there for trade they will be willing to take another 25% on his cap to make him easily added to any roster and in doing so open up the field resulting in the highest return possible.

If you're going futures then it would be something that bankrupts your draft capital for 3+ years and top prospects too.

Rantanen is a rental. His cost as such would still be high. I’d expect a very heavy futures deal with a NHL player coming back. That said it certainly isn’t players with term like Forsling.

No you wouldn’t. Rantanen is not getting NHL stars. Futures and young players for sure.

I dont see the Canes dealing Rantanem for futures to an eastern contending team

The Canes want to win

They will likely be targetting quality NHL players to help fill the roster

Forsling maybe not on the table but Lundell+1st+ would be the ask I would want if Im CAR and dealing Rantanen to a eastern contender (WSH, ToR, NJD, TB, FLR)

I think He will get NHL stars + assets

He just went for Necas + Drury + some picks

If hes dealt again it will cost a top4D or top 6W/C + 1st + to get him
Well whoever is stupid enough to do that is going to regret it. Just let his lose on the canes and get him for free next year.

Yeah.... maybe Hurricanes fans can comment on this, but is Tulsky is the type of GM that would risk losing Rantanen for nothing or is he the kind to trade Rantanen to the highest bidder if Rantanen doesn't sign before the trade deadline?

I mean I feel like you have to go for it now. That’s an ego thing and most GMs can’t admit they made a mistake.

I think the idea is that you want him for a cup run. Getting him next year isn't so simple as just 'go out and buy him'. There's one in stock and he might not even be available to be 'bought' by the time free agency opens up. There's a supply and demand thing in place here

I think it depends on the offers. Canes have always been OK with letting free agents walk away if the price didn't make sense to them but this is a different case with the assets given up to acquire Mikko. If he indicates that he's going to market for the highest bidder then I think the Canes have to look at trading him for the best offer.

Tulsky made this move believing he had the cap space and the 8th year advantage to keep Rantanen long-term. Whether Rantanen is willing to sign in Carolina is still in question.

Whether Tulsky is willing to move Rantanen if he won't sign would be dependent on the return. If the return doesn't significantly move the needle for the franchise long-term why give up Rantanen now vs take the chance he decides on Carolina?

He's perfectly happy to admit something was an error and correct, but I don't think they are punting on the entire season because the trade didn't work (i.e., a complete futures deal.)

The WPG-CAR Ehlers+ deal proposed on ESPN was an interesting one, especially if both sides are allowed to negotiate ahead of time.

OK - Canes want 5 x 1st round picks then. Panthers prospect pool is at the bottom of the league so not interested in picking from there.

Mikko can be yours and you don't have to lose anyone off your roster :)
Do we even have 5 left?

I think he's "worth less" now because I don't see how teams can hope to re-sign him before free agency after a team like the Canes (great team, great org, great place) failed to do so.

How many years into the future can we make trades. Let's go NBA with this and bring in multiple pick swaps and all that too!

Canes shouldn’t move him for futures but he’s a pure rental at this point. Only contenders or those on the bubble would offer roster players to make a trade work and I don’t know how many teams will trade off their playoff roster for a likely rental.

Florida wouldn’t move Lundell or Bennett. I don’t think Canes need D (correct me) but we just traded for one to fill a need.

I think "If" Canes move him, they should see if they can line up where he'd like to sign and try a sign/trade deal. Sure, he could just go there on July 1, but the guy obviously wants to get paid, so Canes are the only one who can offer him the 8th year. That makes the trade a bit bigger, am i wrong?

I get wanting a guy like Lundell. I can’t see that happening from Florida’s point of view, especially with Bennett a pending UFA.

I do think your Verhaeghe + 1st + prospect could work as it opens cap space for Rantanen to extend if they go that route and Florida usually gets their guys signed for less than market value due to tax situation and being one of the top teams in the league.
