I know its Dater, but it does sound like contract talks have broken off for the year. Avs are in a predicament.
- Do they trade him while they are in still "win now" mode?
- Do they keep him for another run, but risk not being able to re-sign him after the season?

Mikko put up a hat-trick in game 1 of the season, and will likely pop-off as most pending UFAs do. Mikko only has a 9-team no trade list this year, so it is a possibility he can be moved. Assuming Landeskog (knee), Lehkonen (off-season shoulder surgery), and Nichushkin (PAP) are all healthy and available end of the November, the Avs top6 without Mikko could still be:

Drouin - Mackinnon - Lehkonen
Landeskog - Mittelstadt - Nichushkin

So many possibilities. Maybe even a trade around Mikko for Shesterkin, since the Avs need goaltending.

Joe Sakic isn't going to pay more than 5 million dollars for a goalie. His modus operndi is all you need is average goaltending if your defense and system is good.

Grubauer had a 30-9-1 season with 7 shutouts and wanted 5.5 million to stay and Sakic let him walk. Traded for a cost controlled goalie on a bad team

Kuemper won the cup with them and went 37-12-4 with 5 shutouts and wanted just over 5 million a year to stay. Sakic let him walk. Traded for new York's Backup goalie and made him a starter and signed him to a cheap deal.

Georgiev is going to want a raise after a 40 win and 38 win season. He will be allowed to walk. And Sakic will sign or trade for a cheap backup to platoon with Annunen, while probably extending Annunen for 3 or 4 years as cheaply as he can if he performs this year.

There is no universe where I see Sakic trading for a goalie he needs to pay 12+ million for.

Its possible. Also wouldn't be surprising if they traded for or signed Blackwood, Spencer Knight, Charlie Lindgren, Logan Thompson

Sakic likes his goalies cheap, short term and expendable. Georgiev wasn't exactly a shiny huge prospect. He was a backup goalie with a 58-48-11 record and average SV% and GAA

If the Leafs even sniff he's close to UFA. They will throw away Marner and sign him to an expensive deal.
