I keep wondering how much of this delay is the Avs knowing how short handed they are with depth, and wanting to keep Mikko motivated, and playing well for a contract so they don't slip out of the playoffs.

Last year we saw the Avs make a pretty uncharacteristic re-signing with Toews during the season, and his play dipped a bit afterwards, which is natural, and not that uncommon.

They NEED Mikko to play at a high level this regular season at least, until the deadline when they can afford to bring in some quality depth.

Yeah, and if he caves to a lower number great.

I doubt it matters at this point.

He has a long history of producing well. He will get paid no matter what unless freak injury.

Producing, but not back checking lol.

Actually he's been better in that regard here lately. Got to give him credit. He skating through pucks more instead of doing that stupid reaching shit he always does too. Which is a reason he's off balance constantly.

Maybe someone uncorked his head from his ass.

Colorado can trade his rights between the draft and free agency if there is no deal to be had and the new team can offer 8 years, no?
I'm not sure on the particulars, but I was under the impression for it to be an 8 year deal, he would have to sign with the Avs and then the Avs would trade him to consumate the deal.

Whatever team owns his rights can sign him to the 8 year deal.

But if a team is giving up significant assets they're going to want the framework of a deal figured out beforehand.

Mostly a lurker on the Avs section of these boards, but wanted to comment on the 8 year part at least

A team can only sign a player to an 8 year contract if they were on their roster at the most recent trade deadline. The only exception is if a player is traded after the trade deadline but still has 1 year remaining on their contract; the new team can sign him to an 8 year contract at the start of free agency, they don't need to wait until after the next trade deadline.

If $14M by 8 years is the starting point for a new contract w/Big Moose, then I'm all for trading him for picks and players. Not the outcome I want, but the Avs need depth. Gee 😱

"It sure sounds like that’s the starting point on an AAV he’d command as a free agent, if he gets to July 1."

7x14 = 98

98/8 = 12.25

Something tells me the Avs don’t want to get to $12m AAV.

Two words.

Sign. And. Trade.
