Canes are a pretty well run team, I find it hard to believe that they are in anyway contemplating trading him after 6 games because he isnt a fit or hasnt extended. First off that sounds absurd, they are trying to extend him . while at the same time think he doesnt fit. Also, they traded for him knowing he may not extend , and trading a guy if he isnt extended makes them look like imbeciles, and I dont think they are that. The big selling point happens if they go deep into the post season, and offer the money.

How much to acquire his rights in the offseason?
Maybe the most a 3rd? Teams don't usually offer much. We are at a point where everybody seems to already know where players are signing before the clock hits the start of free agency.

Boeser + 1st for Rantanen (no additional retention)?

Both UFAs, if Carolina believes they gave a better chance and want to sign Boeser to an extension and the Canucks want to re-sign Rantanen.

I guess it would depend on the circumstances. If Rantanen wants 8 years and there’s multiple teams he’s interested in signing with then there would be competition amongst those teams to acquire his rights before July 1st.

I’m bored and am actually somewhat surprised there’s not a thread already about this will all the speculation that CAR may flip Rantanen if he won’t sign by 3/7,so…

As a Canes fan, I still don’t think they’ll flip him, but I also doubt they get him extended by 3/7, so just wondering what other teams’ fans would potentially offer up for him.

What is Rantanen worth to other teams, strictly as a rental at a $2.3M cap hit (50% retention on his already retained cap hit of approximately $4.6M)?
Silly thread of day

I never get why people get a bug up their butt about a sports fan saying "We" or "Our" when referring to their team.
It is odd to get hung up on such a non issue.

The Raptors and Jays pretty much built their whole PR campaign invluding the fans as part of the team.

A+M famous for including their fans as the 12th man.

He'd have to be on the teams roster to be eligible for an 8 year deal. So it would have to be a sign and trade before free agency and after the trade deadline.

Marner for Rantanen.

Carolina gets a guy who probably fits their system a little better. Toronto gets a guy who isn't asscheeks in the playoffs

I wouldn't be confident in a re-signing if I were either team lol.

If Toronto parts ways with Marner, it probably wont be to sign a replacement Marner for the same amount of money.

From a Canucks POV this would be worth it only in both being a sign and trade scenario. Canucks are not in a position to risk using that first on a pure rental. One would think to if Carolina is getting a UFA back this time you would think they would want the certainty of it not being a rental after swinging big on Guentzel & Rantanen back to back years and not keep them.

Lets see how Marner does tonight in the 4 Nations final. Canada loses and he plays like he is there to collect autographs instead of points, MAYBE he might want to waive his no trade because Leaf media and fans will be losing thier minds. Until then he is going no where.

Why would Carolina want Marner at that point? One of their issues is the offense/PP going MIA in the playoffs.

I’ll never get this “you” or “we” terminology when it comes to sports teams. No, “I” didn’t do anything, “they” did. Would “I” have traded Necas for a rental without an extension on the way, nope, but “they” must have thought an extension was/is possible. None of this is really the point of the thread.

The point is to discuss then”insidurr” reports that the Canes might end up flipping him.
You must be fun at parties

Eh I'd happily let Marner walk just to be rid of him. And if that trade happens amd Rantanen walks so be it, but I'd rather take a shot at signing Rantanen who actually shows up

LOL if 8 years of his shit hasn't soured a person on him, I doubt a no show in the game tonight will do anything to change that. Be great if it happened though

Seravalli speculating today if Rantanen could be flipped, mentioned Vegas as an ideal partner.
For what though?

This is what I don't understand with the "speculating". Not a SINGLE "expert" had Rantanen being traded, let alone that Carolina would make a swing for a player of his caliber. There wasn't a single peep about it, and even both sides agreed that they wanted to keep this extra quiet out of respect for the players involved. In actuality, the only thing that has been said since the beginning, is that they want to give Rantanen the time to get acclimated to the area and the system. They know making an 8yr decision isn't taken lightly. Now, it Mikko/Agent make a public statement that he will test FA and not sign, everything is just noise.

I think the so called experts are just throwing darts on a dart board hoping one hits, because they all missed out on one of the bigger midseason trades the NHL has seen since Thornton got moved.

Money won't be the problem. Canes wouldn't have made the trade if they didn't think they could sign him. There were numerous interviews with Tulsky after the trade, where he states that He knew what Rantanen was asking and that they were prepared to make a competitive offer. If he doesn't extend, it will be because of fit. I'm not him, but if he wants to shake the "riding the Mac" coattails, he should sign with the Canes. He immediately becomes the teams best player.
Not literally afford the cap dollars but with how much they gave up they surely need to save face by extending him?
