when talking about the "modern era", the present and recent past matters a lot more than ancient history when those teams actually had a pulse

Depend when the modern era start.

But for sure when talking about the most successful franchise in the expansion era, 70 to 80 is has important than 80s to 90s or 90 too 2000 right ? How recent the success was being completely irrelevant in the question.

lol Habs are never irrelevant boy. When you no longer have your star players, your franchise will once again be on life suppport. Habs are always gonna be in that upper tier. Even when last, they matter.

The Habs are easily #1.
If they go another 5-10 of mediocrity while a team like Boston or Philadelphia wins a few Cups then we can have the conversation again.
