Ranking teams by fan base size

Au contraire. I'm a real hockey fan who wants to keep the sports to a high level of purity and quality. The fewer teams, the higher the quality. Also no empty buildings. And superstars all playing in real hockey markets.
Nope, a real hockey fan wants to see the sport succeed, not fall back into obscurity, which is what would happen if there were only 6 teams.

I've also arbitrarily decided that you're not a core fan like you decided to do in your original post, so your opinion is irrelevant.

it points to it, in the leaf fan echo chambers. Based on language alone, I assume habs would be most popular in france, belgium, switzerland etc

Except it’s well known and a fact? The big 3 long term are
Toronto is a global market.

NYR and Montreal are big. Not like the leafs.

They are big all over the world. Even India and China (obviously not comparable).

They are known as the global brand of hockey. It’s not an echo chamber…. That’s literally the whole point.

Who knows why? It is pretty undeserved. Probably

1.) hockey is synonymous with Canada globally. Toronto is all people know about Canada (fair or not)
2.) English is more common than French.
3.) the symbol is literally the freakin symbol of Canada.

I notice a lot of Minnesota fans when the team travels to places like Colorado, Dallas, Chicago. There are certainly a larger % of hockey fans in Minnesota than all but the most rabid Canadian locations. As I've said many times before NYC and LA are huge cities, but how many of them really give a damn about hockey. As a former owner of the Kings said, "Now I know why they left Canada: They hate hockey.”.

MN has 1.5M more people than Alberta, which splits their fans between two teams. ALTA fans MIGHT have a higher % of fans per capita than MN, but well over twice as much? I don't think so.

The neighbouring provinces to Alberta don’t have NHL teams, there is that base to draw from as well.

Define "fan base". Folks who are there through thick and thin or fair weather fans? Folks who actually follow the progress of a team, or who are just generally aware of their existence? Folks who pay to watch a game if not locally televised or those who just take notice when the team is mentioned on social media? Folks who will drop $200 on a jersey or those who will drop $8 on a knockoff logo shirt on the discount table at Wal-Mart? An 8-year old kid who just bought a logo cap or a 80-year old fan with a box of logo caps? The guy who will watch a game at the bar if it is on, or the guy who asks the bartender to put the game on so that he can watch it?

I’d say roughly half the hockey fans I’ve met here in Australia follow the Rangers. Also - any shop that sells hockey gear (which is not many) will always have Rangers jerseys. I’d say they are the most recognisable team for non hockey fans too.
Interesting. I've seen all kinds of teams here in Canberra. Maybe Toronto the most but ive seen rangers, sharks, canucks, habs, oilers, stars.... I saw a duck's jersey yesterday. How does someone in AU end up a ducks fan?

I don't think it matters.. how do you even survey that?

some people on here are trying to complicate things. Fans=Following who gives a shit if a fan base is more spread around in the country? what a stupid argument.

Reddit:
Canucks: 99.2k (bigger than Montreal)
Oilers: 51.2k
Flames 46.3k

Twitter:
Canucks: 1.1m
Oilers: 920k (It had a surge since getting McDavid and Dry, but it was around 650-750k pre Mcdavid)
Flames: 683k (can't even crack 700k for the longest time)

CDC is one of the most active official NHL forum out there, I challenge anyone in here to show me a more active one.

Our fan base is so big we have hfboards posters and CDC posters, yes there's a difference and they hate each other.

The Canucks also have a lot more celebrity fans than the ones in Aberta and that matters because they expose the Canucks to their audience.

Micheal Buble, Ryan Reynolds, Carrie-Anne Moss, Colbie Smulders just to name a few.

when or if the Canucks go back to being an elite team, you will see the real size of Canuck nation.

Cute how op tried to sneak the Canucks in there. Original Six, then you can rank everyone else.

You don't seem to understand that similar data =/= same data.
You don’t seem to understand that I’m at least showing evidence to back my claims up, you’re just making assumptions based on nothing

Strangely, there's a lot of Bruins fans in Quebec as well.
There are a few anecdotal reasons for that.

1. WSBK TV used to broadcast the Bruins games back in the day, and it was a very strong signal that could be picked up in Quebec and the Maritimes. So, Boston Bruins hockey was available up to three times a week for anyone who wanted to watch.

2. Disgruntled former Nordiques fans who didn’t want to become Canadiens fans.

3. “Rebels” who just want to be different by rooting for the “bad guys.”

#1 Dallas Stars

Bad data isn't worth much of anything though. You seem to have this notion that unreliable data is paramount, when it clearly is not. Especially when, like i explained, that unreliable data already has huge holes in it even if you take it at face value (which you should not).

Yes, multiple sources and angles showing the same data is unreliable, yet someone’s personal opinion on a hockey forum is reliable 😂

It is a global brand with the big sports teams (Celtics lakers. Yankees this is well known throughout hockey.

1.) This is a yougov poll…. The vast majority of the hockey watching public has never even heard of this or thought to answer on a message board.

2.) Even among the crazy fans most are older and not answering polls. The majority of the world is 50 plus and aren’t doing this. This is clearly a reflection of specific markets with younger fans with better players

NYR. Lundqvist explains sweden
Swiss. Montreal because the only French speaking team
Germany. Leon D.

This doesn’t cover UK. Australia. Who have massive hockey watching populations

Heck 32 thoughts said australia had the 5th most listeners

Yes, and like it's been posted here in this thread earlier from people living in Australia, it's the Rangers over there. What are those assumptions though? Why don't you back it up with something? How many places in Europe have you lived in for example?

Rangers are Not even close globally

Toronto maple leafs are the only global brand in hockey

You can see quite a bit of merch in Europe.

I think it goes back to salming being a major player…..
Not sure why… definitely haven’t earned their fandom but

The leafs are global like the Yankees

Sorry but in the UK at least the Maple Leafs or indeed any NHL team have nowhere near the brand recognition among the general public of the biggest NFL/NBA/MLB teams like the Lakers, Bulls, Yankees, Red Sox, Cowboys or Patriots.

Not even remotely in the same league.
