A mismanaged rebuild.

Carolina was in the similar boat as the Leafs and they somehow managed to build a strong forward group, a really deep defensive core, and they’ve drafted a boatload of players over the past 5 yrs.

And both teams have won 0 games in the third round, Carolina is killing it!

Imagine if he moved off Kapanen and Johnsson a year early at even more positive value, played out Marleau’s contract and kept the Seth Jarvis pick.

As Dubas himself said "On May 19th, I was fired from my job as the General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs... It was the first time I've been fired," said Dubas. "As Dr. Riggs just said, embrace failure and we've had a lot of failure during my time with the Leafs."

In hindsight, we should have traded anyone not with the team currently instead of having them on the roster.

Their window opened last year. The Leafs are not there yet and Buffalo and Ottawa are closing the gap.

Carolina's window opened last year?

Their core forwards are around our core forward's age, and their top 4 D is 28, 29, 32, 38.

Window is just opening!

Yes, last year was the first year I considered them contenders to come out of the East.
Whereas, the year before I ranked them and the Leafs the least likely playoff teams to win the East.

This year they have a solid D and some pretty good forwards and the East shouldnt be as tough during the transition of power, assuming Boston and TB take a step back.

Signing John Tavares

- especially before locking up the young core.
- UFA acquisitions are finishing pieces not early rebuild pieces.
- blowing up the forward budget was poor cap management

Yes, my biggest issue with the Marleau trade was that we seemed to pay a lot more than other teams did to move out his salary. I don't recall any team giving up a 13th overall pick just to move out 1 year of a bad deal. Add on that we did so to keep 2 guys who didn't last 2 years with the team...tough.

I am also a Jarvis superfan so I hate it a bit more for that.
Marleau was a different situation then any of those other trades though.
He wanted to go back to San Jose and they wouldn’t trade for him. If he retired his full cap hit would have stayed on the books, he was owed a significant signing bonus and he wasn’t going to play for any team we traded him too.
So Carolina had to buy him out for no cap relief and little relief in real dollars, thus paying him millions to never play a game for them while taking on his full cap hit.

People underestimate just how bad of a contract it was and how it isn’t really comparable to other salary dumps.

Dubas still deserves criticism for not doing something with Kappinen or Johnsson but it was always going to really hurt moving Marleau’s deal
