If you stay put, you get graded based on whether it makes sense or not. Usually, it does.

If you buy, you get graded based on the trades you made. That ****ing simple.
I see. Well actually I don't.
Do you think the Flames with a young 2nd most powerful offense in the league this year should have stayed put to get a better grade from you and it was a mistake to spend a 4th round pick on a very serviceable depth defenseman?
Or do you think it was a mistake that they didn't over spend on a rental to augment that young and 2nd most powerful offense?

I just want to get your opinion so we don't make that mistake again next year because as everyone knows the Flames window of opportunity to win the cup is almost closed.

It's that f***ing simple. I appreciate your help and I'm sure Brad Treliving will too.

Also might I add that its usually the teacher that grades the pupil. You're no teacher and Brad Treliving sure as hell is no pupil.
In fact I'm amazed at your audacity and hubris to write an article such as this. Its somewhat akin to the slowest student in the class grading the tests of the smartest students in the class.

I'm starting to think you have a problem with my take for the sake of having a problem.

What could they have done that I would have liked more? Acquire a goalie which you desperately need, or stand pat. That roster doesn't really lack much in other areas, so any rental is likely going to waste.

Unless there is a good player going for cheap, you shouldn't get rentals. Fantenberg was about as mediocre as it gets, so there's that.

And yet SJ who have the same, or worse, goalie issues that Calgary has didn't improve their goaltending either and they get a B+ (I guess because they are obviously the clear cut favorite in the west ... LOL... even though they've spent most of the season below Calgary in the standings... LOL.... careful now. You bias is showing)

Man... you're all over the map here.

Anyways, I'll pass on your grade and comments to Brad Treliving. I'm sure he'll appreciate them and I'm sure he'll be contacting you shortly to thank you for your time and effort.

Are we casually ignoring that they got a very good player in Nyquist for cheap?

Calgary's moves did not improve the team. Hard to reward them for that, I think.

It still didn't improve SJ's goaltending issues and that will certainly be more of a critical factor in the playoffs than the acquisition of a cheap Nyquist. Also SJ's window of opportunity to win the Cup is closing quickly, unlike Calgary's.

You can't say that Calgary gets a C because they didn't improve their goaltending and and then SJ gets a B+ because they picked up some secondary scoring but did nothing also to improve their goaltending issue.

Acquire a goalie which you desperately need

Please explain to me why the Flames "desperately need a goalie"?

- Rittich has the sixth best quality start percentage among starters, showing a high consistency in his play rather than a dependancy on shutouts and "big shots against" nights to pad his SV%

- Rittich has the ninth best GAA among starters, with seven of the guys who allow fewer goals per game being older and more experienced

- Rittich has the second best points %among starters trailing only Vasilevskiy

- Rittich is one of the most rested starters heading into the playoffs,

Sorry bro, but there's no desperation any way you look at it, unless you're nitpicking save percentage the way people used to on Jonathan Quick - when it's obvious a guy won't post the best SV% behind such a strong shot suppression team.

Haha... I love this. Calgary gets a C because they desperately need a goalie but I guess SJ gets a B+ on the basis of picking up Nyquist and because they don't need improved goaltending... even though Jones is near the bottom of your list.... LOL. Good one OKG.

Winnipeg would have got an A+ if they picked up a new coach at the trade deadline.

Now, to repeat this process a couple more times, and maybe the Wings finally get rid of their cap issues.
What cap issues? They have lots of money for this offseason and tons and tons for future seasons. They have a lack of talent issue and adding picks is great for solving that, your grade seems a bit low for Wings considering they did exactly what they should do and did it pretty well.

You're using team-based stats in evaluation, which is misleading. Rittich has been at the very least adequate as a starter, but things aren't as rosy as you make them out to be. He has been trending down, as far as I know, and Smith is garbage.

In GSAA and dSV%, Rittich ranks around 30th place among goalies with 500 saves. He is basically performing as well as you'd expect, given how the team limits shot quality in front of him. In the playoffs, you probably need more than just that to win.

Quality start is far less of a team start than save percentage.

Save percentage is always skewed in favour of players on teams that give up a lot of shots. dSV% is a decent stat but still flawed due to undervaluing breakaways and odd man rushes.

And GSAA is useless because it is a cumulative stat and obviously won't favour goalies who play fewer games.

Yet it's true.
I take it you are not familiar with dSV? It accounts for shot quality, so goalies who face lots of quantity rather than quality don't get a head start. Rittich is around the 30th spot league wide in that.

Now, want to elaborate that statement of yours?
