Confirmed with Link: Rangers sign Blake Wheeler [1Y/800K]

The only issue here is his character. He was the captain when Buff quit all together, Laine wanted a trade out of Winnipeg. He was just stripped of his captaincy. Combine that with the Rangers locker room that is probably not the toughest and most tightly knit out there...

But in pure on-ice value terms, how can someone be mad? We were going into the season lacking a top-6 RW, wondering if either Panarin or Laf needed to convert. We just signed a 55pt (in 72 games) for basically league minimum. Just enjoy this one, bright lights of New York have their benefits.
I have no concerns about this whatsoever. He will be fine with his boy Trouba and Kreider, Mika etc.

The locker room stuff is my only concern.

A vet who can still put up good games and fill a position of need for 800k is a no-brainer.

Laf didn’t like RW, Othmann isn’t walking into a roster spot, and Lavi already said he wants Laf and Kakko getting bigger minutes.

What’s the issue? He’s old?

How many times do we need to see ancillary player signings play out before we realize not to get upset about them before the season starts? Maybe he’ll be in the top 6. Maybe he won’t even be on the team. It’s July. For the price, it’s a decent option to have to start

We just started the offseason. This is a risk free move. He may not be fast but he has good size and vision. Based on potential production vs contract Id give it an A grade signing. We may have other moves under consideration including possibly moving Goody or Vesey.

Why do some think there may be a locker room issue? I don't get it. The guy wants to win and wants to be here or he wouldn't sign such a cheap deal. I'm sure they have talked to guys like Trouba about it also. This is not a concern.

a bunch of people here made it up in their own head that Wheeler was a locker room cancer without any proof or corroboration. same shit they do with Panarin.

yeah sorry i’m not interested in another year of Kakko being the only RW worth a damn on the team. were you expecting to hand it to Othmann?
Do you actually believe that Kreider and Wheeler will be on a 3rd line? The only way this doesn't affect ice time and development for the kids is if they are and there is no way that will happen for an extended period. How about finding a player that has been buried in a bottom 6 role w offense in his history that needs a chance at a bigger role, or is that only reserved for expansion teams to try and other orgs like the leafs that constantly find these guys that just need a bigger role to contribute rather than a player that is trending down, is a weak skater for a team that has no speed, and who could based on certain histories become an issue here if his role is too small for his liking.

Lol at anyone upset with this. Wheeler is a very good player still
Lets not go that far.
Wheeler is still not a bad player, but he's not a very good player anymore. He's not gonna get power play 1 time here.

Not many guys take a below market contract to come here. I believe Blake left money on the table by signing here so fast. I like that.

Because those guys are either locked up by their own teams, or cost a fortune? You're comments make it sound like every other team in the league isn't trying to acquire the exact same players?

Yea, like they have all this RW depth. You are too focused on age. It's a one year deal at 800k for a 55-60 point player that can move up and down the lineup. I doubt it affects anything concerning Laf or Kakko. They will get their minutes and need to step up.
Again, if you think he's playing 3rd line w Kreider then that's cute. He is trending down, is not a good skater on a team that is bad skating overall, and will absolutely cut into ice time next year. This org can never look outside the box to identify players that just need a bigger role to be able to contribute. They marry themselves to retreads all the time.

It's Lavi and not Gallant, so let's keep hope alive
I can't believe that you actually think that he's going to be the only one making decisions around here when we already know that drury has intervened regarding player usage in the past. I'm all for being optimistic about stuff but these ideas that he's going to come here and not become a player that gets leaned on is kind of crazy. People actually think that he chose to come here to be a third liner? He's here for a one-year trying to rack up some points and show that he can be a contributor to get another big contract for two or three years after this but the problem is He is falling off and his weaknesses fit into what the same weaknesses are for this team overall.

Then explain to me how other teams are able to find ways to find these guys? Look at what Nashville did last year? Look at what Toronto is done over the last 5 years finding these random cast offs that they can bring in and who actually become contributors to a team. I don't want to hear about the playoff failures cuz that more or less falls on to the goal tending, the defense, and their star shriveling up during the playoffs. But the leaves have been really good at finding players that were just sitting boxed into situations that didn't allow them to evolve and giving them an opportunity with a lot of them flourishing. Vegas has done that post draft and it won them a cup. What is the last time this organization did anything like that? Erik Christensen?

He took an 800K contract. I don't think he has a very high opinion of himself currently. Gallant achieved pretty even 5v5 line TOI at the end of his reign. While I don't think Lavi is going to flat out say there's a 3rd line, he can balance the top 9 fairly evenly

We will at least get a little grittier, if anything
Ehlers has become a grittier player for the jets. Wheeler isn't the player today that people are thinking of 3 years ago

He took a low dollar contract because he knows he's going to get an opportunity to play with either bread or zib and try to build his value back up in order to get another contract after this year. No team wanted to trade for him because nobody wanted to eat even half of his cap hit. That should show you how he was valued around the league. I'm willing to bet he didn't have a contract off for anywhere for more than 1.5 but he knew that if he took a cheap deal in New York for next year he would get an opportunity playing with one of the big stars and having a chance to rebuild value for his last contract before he retires. You people are acting like you did the Rangers of favor, he and his agent are doing this for himself to make more money after this contract. And the only way he's going to make more money after this contract is if he gets to play with our top players to get those points. That's why I think it's hilarious that people here think that he's just going to play on the third line and not be eating up other prime minutes from players

If he can regain it in the right environment, it will be the best one of the best contracts in the league
