Proposal: Rangers Sabres blockbuster

Two teams needing to shake things up after disappointing seasons that we heard from multiple sources were in serious talks earlier about at least one of these guys.

Two young guys maybe looking for a change of scenery for two young guys maybe in need of a change of scenery

To New York:
* JJ Peterka W, 23, GP: 77 27/41/68 RFA: $0.9M, Projected $7-8M for term
* Bo Byram D, 23, GP: 82 7/31/48 RFA: QA $4.2M, Projected $6-8M for term

To Buffalo:
* Alexis Lafreniere W, 23, GP: 82 17/48/25 Signed at $7.4M for 7 years
* K'Andre Miller D, 25, GP: 74 7/20/27 RFA: QA $4.6M, Projected $5.5-6.5M for term

Contracts, ages and positions roughly match up. Rangers get a more skill, the Sabres get more size.
Peterka had basically the same amount of points alone as Miller and laf combined....totally makes sense....

If they were rated out of 100 for fun what wpuld each player be
I will Bite.

Peterka: 83 - 90's for offense, hit by defense
Byram: 77 - 80's offense, 70's defense.
Borgen: 61 80's defense, offense ???
Rempe: 10 100 for fighting 0 for the rest.

You think BUF would have any interest in the 12th this year or are they set on not caring about lottery picks at this point?

If you’re talking as a sweetener, sure.
But as the main piece in a Peterka or Byram deal, absolutely not.

The Sabres management is under immense market pressure to make the playoffs next year. If they are trading important pieces, it will be for other important pieces. And ones with value beyond the short-term.

I think Kevyn Adams has telegraphed his mindset in his past 3 deals:
  1. Cozens for Norris
  2. Savoie for McLeod
  3. Mittelstadt for Byram
That’s where I think their focus is, and where this proposal is rooted.

Like most of the people who have replied, I think the OP favours the Rangers. But I was curious to see if others agreed, and how it could be improved.

Because player evaluation is always in the eye of the beholder and these pieces (Laf in particular), have a wide range of opinions.

Assuming these 4 are actually available, I think the bones of a deal are there.

Well, yeah, powerplay points matter so I won't knock him for it. But if you break it down to even strength production it certainly changes things and brings them much closer. Again, powerplay points matter, but so does context when trying to say a player basically had the same amount as points combined.

Exactly, I don't think Buffalo has any interest in LaFreniere. His contract is a boat anchor. I would want assets just to take him.
It’s not that bad, a little steep but he’s still just 23 and doesn’t get much PP toi if I recall.

Definitely not a boat anchor, he’s still a good player. I could see him being the type of player Buffalo could use. Still don’t know if the value is right in swap for Peterka but at least Buffalo gets a good player locked in for term since they can’t attract much in free agency!

I think when it comes to Laf its a make or break season for him this year. He went from 28 goals to 17 goals. Thats not what you want to see in a young player.

If Buffalo is trading with NYR its probably starting with Cuylle+ for Peterka.

I don't think the Rangers trade Cuylle and I don't think Buffalo wants to take on the salary of Laf.

Unless the Rangers make other moves their PP is still not changing much. Which means any incoming player who has a large number of PP points probably is going to see decrease production. Which means JP and his 18 PP points isn't exceptionally appealing especially if he signs for 7 mill+.

I also want no part of Byram as he is not what the Rangers need due to his concussions. They just ditched Chytil and we all saw what happened.

Dumb

Buffalo gives up the 2 best players.

Pp or not the sabres are giving up what like 60 points of production in this trade? Thats not something to sneeze at and blame pp points. My point was that was JUST peterka nvm the Byram part. If you wanna dive deeper into it one could also argue peterka is young and growing and his ppg is likely to uptick. Could also argue that Byram would as well not just because of age but because he'd gain aforementioned pp time without being behind dahlin and power...

Chatfield is a fine enough player not knocking him. Hes just not the bridge of value in this deal. If im sacrificing points for defensive prowess id rather go back into the minny thread and find a way to get brodin.

Interesting pot shot at the end...cant attract free agents so take our overpaid overvalued player so you can say you spent (wasted) money?? You know who is also 23 and hasn't regressed? Peterka....

NYR would have to add Cuylle and Buffalo still likely says no. The value isn’t even close

As a Sabres fan, would take a 2 for 3 deal with the 3rd being Cuylle in a heartbeat.

I’d prefer a Cuylle Schneider package to the OP as a Sabre fan as a better match for Sabre needs.

Personally I find it hard to picture a Peterka or Byram to the Rangers trade that wouldn’t include Schneider. He’s too much of a perfect fit for what the Sabres need, but not so important the Rangers couldn’t give him up as part of a package for a better player.

I’d probably say the same for Cuylle, but Rangers fans were pretty united on Cuylle not being on the table.

"Due to his concussions"

He missed 0 games last season.

I feel like Cuylle+Schneider for Byram+Peterka is a trade that fans of other teams would feel is fair (feel free to opine!), but fans of NYR and BUF would feel is lopsided toward the other team.

That’s usually the sign of a trade that is pretty even 🤷‍♂️
