Of course we're gonna blame the failed signee over our own kid, but anybody paired with Hajek might as well get their legs chopped off.

It's a small sample, but in 46 minutes of Hajek-Fox, the Rangers are negative in every metric.
Smith kept the play alive for Buffalo a lot. He did a lot reverse plays, thinking he was Fox, to Hajek but did them and all his other plays slow, so him and Hajek both kept getting trapped. He couldn't trap the puck behind the net on the Sabres' wire-arounds. He was a big reason for the pair's performance.

- Granato did a better job with Buffalo than Quinn did with the NYR.
- Was good to see the Chytil and Laf in OT, but disappointed in their play. Still cannot figure out the logic behind which players get promoted/game time and which don't.
- KZB have gone back into their shells after Quinn returned.
- Can't ride Panarin's genius as the main (only) offensive game plan.
etc. etc.

Getting off the topic of Igor, the thing that sucks about this game to me as that we just got beat. Vally was worried about Ullmark stealing it, he didn't. Other than that big save on Kravtsov late did he do anything remarkable? He wasn't even tested in the OT. You have a goalie that supposedly has given up one breakaway goal all season and you play like chicken shit against the worst team in the league in two straight OTs. Last one we got lucky we got a two on one break with like 30 seconds left. We had one chance in the third and Mika lost control of the puck. And during the first 60 minutes it's not a stretch to say we were outplayed. This team is much better than the Sabres but they seem to think the gap's bigger than it is. They just looked awful today and that first period against them in the prior game.

There's not much we can do with the third pairing. With what little cap space we had management decided to sign jack johnson instead of someone who could have been useful.

I fully expect Pittsburgh to dismantle us.

Next week is the dagger
They had their flashes of brilliance but I just think they and Panarin and Strome embody that soft rather than hard game that is the foundation for the future

Teams can have skilled perimeter players, they just can’t all be perimeter players

I appreciate the optimistic view but they lost against a 22 point team?
Buffalo is playing pretty well.
And I do want to see the Rangers shoot more. It’s infuriating seeing them try to make these perfect passes for tap-ins that usually fail.
But that’s really my only quibble. The team is looking pretty good to me. They didn’t even come out slowly today.

I agree. There needs to be a variety to the offensive firepower. If some of that grease fire is to come from the kids, then there's catching up still to balance out the finesse. But part of it is also that the vets will not get greasy. They're way too clean game in game out. It makes a huge hole in the team makeup as being easy to play against and it's a big reason why they are not a good 6v5 comeback team. The one-goal losses quite sting and it's one of their weaknesses.

I don't watch a lot of games outside of our games, but a thing that is immediately apparent to me is that top players on other teams play a hard game. They go to the net. They take point shots and sniff for rebounds. They do the grunt work.

JJ must be on the LTIR now, right? I assume we get that cap space to use if we go over the cap. Is that right?

Quinn must be telling 3 of the 4 lines to just keep it simple and make simple plays, only several forwards are allowed to make risky creative plays.

I really can't deal with all the negative comments and whining that is going to go on so I'll just say Igor played great, that 2nd goal was not his fault he didn't see it, and our guys didn't score a single goal in the shootout. Panarin tried to be way too fancy, idk wtf that was, just shoot your amazing lazer wrist shot. Nobody goes 5 hole anymore? And Yeah Kakko should have played in OT, it was dumb to not play him in OT and then put him out their as the 3rd shooter in the shootout.

Hey losing 18 games in a row will motivate a team, the Sabres are motivated, they're sick of losing and they won't be easy to beat from here on out. We still have plenty against the Devils and Flyers that we will get points, and we'll beat the Isles too.

We could commit a murder at center ice and Rangers fans would say we're not hard/gritty/tough/whatever enough.

It's just a trope.
I think it’s not a comment on violence. More that these guys don’t take the direct “greasy” approach that can be quite a good tool in a hockey team’s arsenal.
Our Top Six plays too one-dimensionally. I am excited about Gauthier and Kakko though. They might give us a more straight-ahead look. Not that I am advocating our M-O always be that. But sometimes. Mix it up a bit more. Give the opponent a little more to worry about.

Glad Quinn responded with making sure not to lose the kids. Don’t mind losing the game either, if that was the result.

That being said the team does seem, from a layman perspective, to have a problem generating consistent offense. We had an explosion for a couple weeks there and now it seems to be drying up again.

Hard to draw too many conclusions in this Covid weird year and while facing some of the best teams in the league like every night, but Quinn gets one more season in my book to get the secondary offense (ie not from Panarin and Zibanejad) figured out.

The team isn't coached to play like that. We're one of the biggest teams in the league and we have a power guy on every line. It's not something they need in terms of roster building.

Quinn is the personification of internet grit in a real coach. He wants nebulous try-hard stuff without it being in his system.

And it is about violence to an extent. I've seen the same people crucify greasy-area players like Boyle, Fast, and Kreider because they're not face-punchers. And when Kakko comes into his own, he'll be next.

David Quinn is not a good NHL coach.

We are not a good team. Once again, emphasizing the word 'TEAM'..

We have a highly skilled roster with great potential... a wild card of a team. We can beat the best and be outplayed by the worst.

and to top it off... we have a really weak locker room. Leadership, all around, leaves a lot to be desired

ps.- Quinn was much better with personnel management today. So, that's a plus.
