Crosby got his contract under the old CBA. It would have been more like Malkin's 9.5 per year otherwise. But I agree. I was hoping for something between 7.5 and 8 per year.

Even at 9.5 it would still be too close to Crosby's deal. I really don't see how we are paying a dime over 7.5 on a long term deal.

He was. He is not anymore - see that 2,5 GAA and .917 sv %? That's average at best, not even in the top 20. You pay for how he performs now and not how he performed in the past. This deal is absolutely brutal.

So, what team do you root for? Do they wear red?

1. I love Hank
2. You knew this was coming, no chance they let him walk. He is a league wide star. He is one of the best players the Rangers have ever drafted.
3. I think it's questionable to invest a $8.4M cap hit in a goalie. Open ice + composite sticks means Shawn Thornton can snipe it on you of given time and space. Only so much it can do.
4. Gotta hope the cap goes up
5. No hometown discount = he needs to put the team on his back especially in the playoffs. Zero excuses. Getting paid as the best in the league, be the best in the league.

Meh, would have liked a bit of a hometown discount. I mean, he will be making .2 less than Crosby if the numbers are accurate.

Sidney Crosby: 12 years $104 million.

Henrik Lundqvist 7 years $59 million.

From what I've been reading, the cap is definitely going to go up.

I read somewhere (I think it's on the BoH forum) that GMs project the cap to go up to $80M within three years and $90M within 5.

I just don't get the mentality of knocking guys that get paid handsomely for going WAY above expectations in their job description, while scores of players go through this revolving door of a roster and fail to make any impact whatsoever. These guys usually get a pass. Absurd way of thinking.

I agree with everything here.

The no hometown discount thing really irks me (especially after I think we paid him high on his last contract). If he's going to be the Crosby of goalies, I want elite play every game.

If we want to compare goalies, Hank isn't worth 1.5M more than Rask is. I have no problem paying him .5 more. Not 1.5.

Rask hasn't played more than 45 games in an NHL season yet.

He is a top goalie, but he hasn't proven himself to the same degree.

So you're saying the next 7 years will be better than his first 7? At a higher cap hit? How many more prime years will he have playing the style he plays?

I never said that. But based on his resume, I believe he's going to maintain his high level of play for quite a few more years.

In all honesty I dislike this badly. Far too much money for a 32 year old.

He's 31.

Richter tore his acl on the goal post going side to side, could have happened to anyone. Keep telling yourself this is a great contract while Lundqvist's salary will handcuff the team, and they'll wallow in mediocrity year after year. I'm sure the teeny bopper know it alls in here will call me a hater like always but oh well.

Richter had numerous problems with his knees. Sprains, acl tears, etc. Despite being your textbook standup goaltender.

Again, just because Lundqvist is a butterfly goalie doesn't mean his knees are going to fall off soon.

Not really 100% behind this signing but I hope at least now Hank can play with 0 distractions and string together some solid w's.

If the cap goes up as everyone is predicting it will this contract will be a sure win for the team and in a few years 8.5 wont seem that bad.

Theres plenty of things worth being a penny-pincher about. That ain't one of them.

Quick, lets be a bean counter for one of the greatest Rangers of all-time so Sather can throw another million at Pyatt or Pouliot.

I'm still not buying the Rask hype. Having the best defenseman in the last 10 years plays 30 mins a night guarding your crease will help your stats very much.

I want to see how he performs with no Chara. Lundqvist is still the better goalie until Rask can play this lights out for 3 more years.

I hope he plays like he has the past 8 years.

Wins is a team thing, and this team stinks.

Should have a decent amount of cap for next year to remodel the offense. Even with RFA and UFAS on roster, some will go, others stay. Youth should be served. Saying we need a 1 is dumb. Stepan is a 1C. Need to see if Brass can be 2C. If Miller or Lindberg can be 3Cs it would help a lot. Need to find end line scoring wingers, be it internal or trade/FA.

This is a good deal. Both sides got something they want. We get Hank for the rest of his career. Number in the rafters.

about 500k more than i was hoping for in annual cap hit...but it's not the end of the world. cap will be going up and richards will be going elsewhere. hard not to be happy about hank being a career ranger.

Rask hasn't even played an entire season as a starter yet. I think he is absolutely worth 1.5 million more than Rask because Rask isn't worth 7 mil! Not yet at least.

Sure it is. I expect a bit of loyalty from Hank at this point. We are paying him market value. Zero hometown discount.

With that said, it's all moot if we win a Cup. However, like Hattrick said, he better be the Crosby of goalies with this contract, now. Elite game in, game out. No falloff in the playoffs. There's no excuse at this point if he's going to be paid 8.5M.
