What Makes a Prospect?
A player will be considered a prospect until he meets the following criteria:
  • If a prospect is a skater (forward, defenseman) and has played in 65 NHL games or more before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday; or, if a goaltender has played in 45 NHL games before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday, that player will be considered graduated to the NHL. Conversely, if a player completes the season of his 24th birthday without passing those milestones, then that player will no longer be considered a prospect by Hockey’s Future, regardless of the player’s status with his NHL club.
  • An NCAA player who signs his first contract at or above the age of 22 has three years to meet the above criteria (65/45), while those NCAA players that turn pro under the age of 22 will be subjected to the criteria above.
  • European players who sign their first NHL contract at or above the age of 22 have three seasons from the time they sign that contract to meet the above criteria. Those European players below the age of 22 that have signed a NHL contract will be subjected to the criteria in section one.

NOTE: These are general guidelines and should be followed the majority of the time but certain players may still be listed as prospects if circumstances warrant.

so naturally, the over-enthusiastic among us are now waiting for
Garand, Cuylle, Rempe to sign AHL deals like Schneider did,
and when OHL states their schedules, Skinner and Vierling too
(reality check: i don't really think they would all get signed that way
and I don't think Rempe, at his young stage, would get an AHL game,
but some others could, and the attention and togetherness could make up some for no Prospect Camp...)

FYI precedent for OHL players assigned to AHL teams

That's weird. But doesn't Colorado have their AHL franchise in like Ohio?

there new team Colorado Eagles play in Loveland, CO which is about an hour from denver. but there are others that aren't close. I think all teams would ideally have them close but its not always an option that there is an available arena, especially when the NHL team doesn't own the AHL team.

Tampa (FL) has a team in Syracuse (NY)
Vancouver (BC) has a team in Utica (NY)
Carolina (NC) has a team in Chicago (IL)

There are some examples of what you were referring to but the LA Kings and Ontario Reign aren't one of them ;)

I wonder if those teams are a disadvantage of getting players in the lineup quickly when they call them up.

There's about a dozen teams that are independently owned. Ideally every franchise would own an AHL franchise that is located close by.

At the same time, we know there are some NHL teams that struggle in their own market.

I know numbers don’t always tell the story, but Kravtsov only has 5 assists in 37 games? Yeesh.
His teammates are terrible, is always the narrative. Despite the fast that Sedlak has 12 goals, and Hyka has 9, they're both worthless. If Kravtsov had good line mates he'd have 20 assists and would be a PPG player, no doubt. :sarcasm:

I'm obviously being over the top, but people like to argue he's held back by his teammates. That's the story, to hear many tell it. He may have posted 13 assists in 50 games on a dramatically worse offensive team a few years ago, but this year it's just because his teammates suck.

Sedlak sucks is the answer to everything.

He truly does.

Even he admits that he was barely a 4th liner in the NHL - the reason he decided to go to the K so he didn't have to fight for a spot on a daily basis - paraphrasing his own quote.

Is that right? We've got a 6 foot 8 center in the WHL?

yep drafted late, after all the exciting guys, just before with the over-tall Swedish goalie

2020 round 6 #165 overall by New York Rangers
"He works hard, and I think that the habits in his game for all three zones are decidedly positive. He had some great backchecks to eliminate rush opportunities for the Chiefs. He got rewarded with a rebound tap-in goal on the power play in the third period. Nothing too, too special. but the type of goal one wants to see from a player with Rempe's size. Certainly."
