I think the issues with Ronning and Day were that 1) good production in an overage year when you are competing against younger players doesn't really mean that much and 2) adjusting from a junior league to a pro league is not that easy.

I think the lesson from Reunanen is to be a little more patient with the guys who have talent, especially if they're dealing with / recovering from injuries, or going through team / league changes. Maybe that applies to Pajuniemi, Ragnarsson, Gropp, Day, and Gilmour to some extent.

I could be wrong about Ronning, but he and Day weren’t overagers. But I do agree with your overall point

Add Vinni. He's an absolutely dominant AHLer, not just good, but dominant down there. He was not yet ready for the NHL when he was called up because creative players with a complex game need to be better than guys with a simple game that's safer to make it. He could be a late bloomer because he got good late and still improved a ton. His points per game went up from .65 to 1.05 since last year. I think he improves more and becomes a top 9 NHL player. I wouldn't give up on him just yet.

I think Ronning's was an overage season. He turned 20 during that year, and I'm pretty sure that's what determines if he counts towards that quota or not.

100% right on Day though, he just seemed like he was an overager, because he'd been playing in the OHL since he was an infant.

I’ve always understood that the age limit was a player who turned 20 before the calendar year change in the season, but they could go back for one more year for what would be overage season

Ronning was overage. He was a 97 birthday and it was the 2017 season. His age 20 season and his fifth season.
