add Gropp or Yogan
... or Scanlin
Andrew Yogan is still playing in the German minor league at age 32. Perhaps he can make a comeback.

Chmelar add Scanlin.
See Vince M. article yesterday on Rangers depth defense in which he quotes someone in the organization as saying Scanlin was the best defenseman last season in Hartford.

I think I preferred Mackey to Scanlin, but they both have their plusses. I honestly feel like Mancini was the best when he showed up, especially into the postseason when he seemed to get comfortable. Hollowell and Brouillard did some nice things but were adventures most nights. Scanlin was steady.

I like Scanlin a lot, but I'm not sure if he's more than a 7 or 8, maybe a #6 in the right circumstance. I also wonder how much development runway he has left given that he's already 25.

Like you I saw Mancini play in college and was high on him and thought lots of posters were sleeping on him. He was very steady in Hartford after the college season except for one game in which he was having trouble with the puck that lead to a goal and another tough chance. He was wearing a guard over his mouth so maybe that was the trouble. Scanlin is very steady. He can play either side. He's big and can be physical and is strong in front of the net. He usually makes the correct read. He's always on the first PK pairing. I think he could be a 6 with an offensively skilled partner. But I agree that time is running out and if he's sent down he has to clear waivers. Mancini has time on his side. With Ruhwedal and Fitzgerald I don't think he gets a shot this year but maybe he earns it. But I like his chances next year when Trouba almost certainly is gone for cap reasons.

I'm with you on Mackey too. He's 27 so he's not eligible as a prospect but I'd put him somewhat ahead of Scanlin or Robertson if we were calling up a LD. He's got a bit of NHL experience and he plays a harder game. He gets around better than Harper who will be back after missing most of last season. Robertson has the most tools but hasn't figured out what to do with them.

Hollowell and Brouillard were the power play D for the Pack last year. Hollowell was better but I don't think either of them was ever a serious candidate to go up to the Rangers if someone got hurt. Brouillard is a liability in his own end and a penalty taking machine and he'd do a lot of that at critical times. If there was a shit time or place to go off to the penalty box he would find it and often it was unnecessary stick fouls.....kind of like slashing a guy with 3 minutes to go and the game is tied. I saw no reason at all to bring him back.
