Kinda torn on this one. I feel like Jones and Berard have the most upside, but for someone like Jones he fits the mold of a number of other defenders in the league now that need a very specified role to cater toward their strengths and cover for their weakness. Much like DeAngelo here, lots of offensive usage, key PP minutes, sheltered defensive usage.
Little off topic, but that's my hangup with Jones on this team. I think he's a fantastic prospect, he has the tools to be a good offensive player but he likely won't have a prominent PP role with Fox here. At that size if you cant defend well you need to be a dynamic offensive player. And if they're not a key part of the PP and they're a liability on D its just not a good fit. That being said, if he can improve a little in terms of D and physicality and still move the puck effectively at this level he can be a good piece to have in a sheltered role. Sometimes those smallish offensive defenders take a little time too. Tony was 23 when he went full time. Gostisbehere turned 23 during his first full season, Ryan Ellis as well. Cam York (22), Callen Addison (23), Nils Lundkvist (22) are all essentially in the same boat this past year. All very similar sort of players. Undersized, skilled, questionable defense.
Berard honestly if he built off his prior season it would've made it a much easier choice. He's one of a few guys that we have now where his tenacity gives him a solid floor. He's got real skill as well. Middle 6 upside, I think its fair to assign him that, although I don't think there's ever going to be an opportunity for him to get 2nd line minutes here, but who knows...
Sýkora it's hard for me to say exactly what his offensive upside is. He's so damn young, has played pro hockey since he was 16. Like people have said before, he might be our prospect with the highest NHL certainty based on his work ethic and 2-way play alone. It'll be interesting to see how much his offensive skills develop
Cuylle is tough, he can score and he's got a little skill here and there. Another one thats hard to play against. Wonder if maybe he can be a bit of a Troy Brouwer. I'd say he has a real chance at making the 4th line this year.
Can't go wrong with any of them
