News Article: Rangers on team USA

USA has a good, deep set of young-to-middle aged forwards with grit and defensive responsibility.

The only thing they don't have is that one gamebreaking player, like a Crosby or Malkin or Sedin pairing to make you really gasp. Kane and Kessel are close, but not in the same league as the very best. It's more about a consistent wave of good, honest two way play for the US lineup, that is how they will win games.
 
I just hope we stay injury free with so many guys playing from our club . Crossing my fingers...I think Kreider might have a shot with his speed and size especially with his improved play of late .

Loving Krieders game but too mnay established guys in front of him. See him 2018

The Czechs and Fins have 3 lines that can go-go-go as well. Slovakia had such an amazing 2010, but their roster looks to be the one that falls off the most this go'round.

Shutdown d-men on larger ice-surfaces are an entirely different breed than on the NA rinks. Guys like McD and Suter are necessary. Orpik might not have the wheels to play serious coverage this Olympics.

Bishop has played well enough to be considered for that third spot. And Anderson will also be on the radar as well, although he isn't having as good a season. I also think there is some question about how Quick will recover from his injury.

But, they are definitely stacked in goal.

with the way Chris Kreider is playing?? does he have chance of playing for team USA???

I'd say this is pretty accurate for how it will be.

However, if I'm responsible for these rosters Callahan, Stepan and Hagelin are cut. Callahan is a lock based on reputation but he really shouldn't be there the way he has played for over a year now.

I would also give Kreider a strong look. He would be even more effective on the big ice. USA Hockey really likes him as well, inviting him to the WC as a 19 year old.
 
I guess Callahan is in, but I don't think he deserves it based on his play this year. I guess they see him as a PK specialist. I'd rather have Kreider on that big ice surface. At least Stepan and Kreider have done chemistry...
 
Callahan playing on USA's 4th line and killing penalties definitely has value. Callahan on a USA scoring line, not so much.

The problem is Callahan isn't the same energy player he used to be. I don't see him come flying in on the forecheck and throwing hits or sacrificing himself to block shots these days. He has certainly refined his offensive game slightly, but his stupid plays in the offensive zone have also skyrocketed. And considering the effort we see on the ice every game, it looks like he's doing a **** job as a leader to boot.

Injuries are most definitely playing a part in this, and they are a major reason Callahan should not be given a long contract this summer.

If you get a determined and hustling Callahan in Sochi though his value is through the roof, even in a loaded tournament like the Olympics. That's what Poile and company have to be banking on at this point.

Personally, I also wonder if he is holding back a bit to ensure he stays healthy through the biggest contract year of his career.
 
A bit of history. The Rangers had 6 guys on the United States Olympic team in 1988. None of these guys had actually yet played for the Rangers but all of them would. They were Brian Leetch--Boston College, Mike Richter--Wisconsin U., Tony Granato--Wisconsin U., Corey Millen--Minnesota U., Kevin Miller--Michigan St. U. and Peter Laviolette who had played for a Division 2 College hockey team--Westfield St. U. Laviolette had signed with the Rangers as a free agent and played a year in the AHL. The others were all Rangers draftees. There was another Ranger draftee on that team Clark Donatelli--Boston U. whose rights had been traded to the Edmonton Oilers. He played in the NHL as well but not for very long.

He doesn't strike me as that kind of guy. I think he's playing through injury. Maybe his shoulder is not fully strengthened. It's been only six months since surgery.

Fair enough. His track record to date would certainly suggest that he isn't holding back.

Shoulders are still the one few things that hasn't really been mastered in terms of modern surgery. So many of the guys I played with have popped out a shoulder and needed surgery to "fix" it, only to have it pop out again later. It's incredibly frustrating for them and I cringe whenever I see it happen on the rink. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it's still effecting Callahan and continues to do so for a while.
 
An interesting tidbit. Neither Canada or US have never gotten a medal in the "real" Olympics When it has been played outsideNorth American ice. But gone head to head in both finals in NA. Conspiracy? Probably not but the all important network ratings surely go up if US meets Canada.

I think Russia will be one team in the finals. If they fail, look for a huge mess in the KHL to follow. The other team there will be hard choose as of now. Canada or Sweden is the easy pic, but I think Czech is a real sneaky dark horse on the big ice.

Miller played a pretty good game the other night. Keeping in mind the team he has in front of him, I think he's definitely a very viable option.

Its very obvious that Cally is playing hurt. Whether that benefits the team or not is up for debate but wish some would get off his back.
