Happy to see AV go to my East team. AV is nothing but class, he preaches a great system and gets the most from his players. His style was stale in Vancouver, but that happens to the best of coaches. You guys will love him and I wish nothing but the best for both the Rangers and AV.

Like Ehrhoff was? People seem to forget how good Kes was on the point for the PP in 2009-10. His great shot made him a threat, but his desire to shoot eventually made him redundant with Edler.

Ehrhoff was a great offensive puck mover and had a great shot as well, he played the right side like a champ but was susceptible to chipped pucks past him.

Kesler is 2009 had 216 shots, 11.7 shooting percentage, and 50 assists, and helped his line mates Samuelsson / Raymond have career highs in goals. In 2009-2010 he was primarily a passer, and then he trained all summer on his shot, and went to unloaded 260 shots for 41 goals.

I remember the main problem being Kesler being so good at screening they felt he was a bigger asset in front of the net.

That is the most accurate analysis of someone I have ever read. The Cons will drive you crazy as time goes on. Biggest Con has to be conservative with a lead. If the Canucks didnt set a record for blowing 2 goal leads, then they came close to it.

Won't be a problem because the Rangers never get 2 goal leads.

i think it might be different. We obviously know that the players had it with torts so now we get the total opposite we might see them fly out of the gate

Just pointing out the last two seasons we haven't really come out flying.

I agree with you, think hockey will be fun again for some of these guys that had grown tired of Torts antics. Expect them to be pretty excited to get going.

Im not saying you are wrong. I just think that this is the type of coach they wanted. Also i think this helps guys like kreider. i mean Torts finally let the kid loose in the last 3 games but by then it was too late

Just want to thank the Canucks fans, who are offering their insight on our new head coach. We really appreciate it! Really good stuff in this thread.
I gotta say the Canucks fans have been pretty classy and pretty positive about the hire

Try to ignore those that have nothing but negative comments about him. While I *do think* it was time for him to move on; I haven't forgotten he was pretty much the best coach the team has every had (granted - given the history of the club, it ain't saying much :D).

Think it was better that his friend Bowness isn't along as well for the Rangers (as the blueliners coach); didn't think much of what he did with what he as given.

Weird....looks like there's a chance the two clubs will be effectively "trading coaches"....

We'll be happy to do the same if the situation arises

Don't expect to have your regular season roster players playing in lots of exhibition games. He likes to I think feel out what he has to work with for quite some time before trying to create an identity for a team. He won't always make the subtle moves, but a lot of his hunches are right more often than wrong. He doesn't like defenseman who like to move up the rink with the puck themselves (see: Ballard) but I think he will be relying on McD and Girardi to be his #1 shut-down pair (as any sane coach would be). He likes to run a dump and chase, cycle game that crashes the net I think so I think he will let Nash, Brassard, and Callahan be more creative in the offensive zone too.

Overall, great move here by the Rangers. Really excited what he can do for this team.

I find this hilarious because Torts' utilization of the dump and chase was one of things that was criticized the most this past season.

Dump and chase is fine if done correctly. It doesn't mean that you dump it behind the net and have all three of your forwards congregate behind the redline for a grind party like the Rangers did.

Thanks for the kind words! I'm excited to see AV work here. Wanted him since he was available.

I tend to agree that the dump and chase is fine if executed correctly, but that certainly wasn't the sentiment of most Rangers fans this past season.

I think Vigneault is a great fit for New York. He's a laid-back guy with an easygoing personality and good sense of humour, the pressure of a big market will not get to him. He's coached in Montreal and Vancouver, he's used to ridiculous media demands and constant controversy and he doesn't get rattled.

Vigneault is very big on accountability and having the players lead the team. If a no-name guy is playing well, Vigneault will always go with him over a big name, big contract or high draft pick who is not playing well. He's not a coach who will give a hot-shot prospect ice time they haven't earned yet. He prefers a veteran squad who know what to do in the NHL, and his system emphasizes that offensive success starts with responsible team defence. He's used to coaching talented, skilled players and having them play a strong two-way game without sacrificing too much on the offensive end.

I think that he will have great success with the Rangers, they are a very similar team to what he had in his best years with the Canucks: a great goalie, a blueline that has a lot of depth but doesn't really have that one top guy, and a good mix of talented forwards who can fill a lot of roles.

Still hasn't hit me that Torts was fired and AV is coaching. Gonna be weird first few games not seeing Torts behind the bench. Anyone else feel this way?

As did I, but liked him or hated him Torts had a strong personality, that's the point I'm trying to make
of course his personality is tough to forget. there not many coaches like him in the nhl in regards to the wa he handles the media and on the bench

Glad we're cleaning house of the M*******s. Having guys from Boston running the team is almost as bad as having an Islander at the helm...

As obvious as it is to be excited about AV coaching Kreider, Stepan, Nash, etc, I'm most interested in seeing what becomes of guys like MDZ and McD. Guys that have offensive potential to their game, that seemed to be getting completely stifled under Torts.

This is why im happy about the move. We saw in the playoffs that it helps when your defenders can score. Both MDZ and Mac have that ability. Also the nash-stepan-kreider line will be great to see again
