IMO they are the two best teams in the entire Eastern Conference, at least right now. They're major state rivals. It's being played in the loudest and most rabid arena in the NHL. It's going to be extremely intense. I can't think of another matchup this season that had all of these ingredients.

If the blizzard is as bad as expected, this game might not even happen. The meteorologists better be wrong, don't feel like dealing with that much snow.

Really hard to see the first game out of the all-star break in the midst of a blizzard being a huge deal to anyone. Really, it's going to be a weird crowd if the game is played.

The arena is going to be 25% full if it even happens. Nobody is driving through 2 feet of snow to go to the game without public transportation not to mention LI has awful snow removal.

You just don't get it - it's THE MOST IMPORTANT REGULAR SEASON GAME IN HISTORY!!!

There are two, at most three points on the line. It's as important as Buffalo v. Edmonton. Perhaps less so since that game has a direct effect on where a player like McDavid/Eichel goes.

It's just a regular game in the middle of the season, definitely not the most important one

Dont really care about these eastern teams games, which have absolutely no impact on the wests standings.

These two teams have a what, 96% chance of making the playoffs? I am not seeing the importance as it decides - likely at the absolute most - the playoff seeding.

14 other teams in the NHL can make that claim about a quarter of the games on their schedule.

Haha yeah man. There is no real difference between Oilers and Islanders, Sabres or Lightning. Just teams playing a game. And only some of those teams can draft McDavid.

The real reason I watch the playoffs is to see who gets what pick. Not sure why people care who goes deep, unless you win it all its just a worse draft pick. If anything losing the cup is a smart choice, you get to pick one ahead of the team that wins it.

Hey can't wait for that killer Sabres vs Oilers game. Maybe I'll watch a Kings vs Hawks game 10 years from now when they are playing for Aito Iguchi.

I know this is going to come as a shock, but the world doesn't revolve around your little island. It's a game between two playoff teams - cool. There are 16 teams that make the playoffs every season, and between 3 and 5 in a division. With 82 games played per season, there will be meetings between divisional playoff teams fairly frequently, probably at least every week. Is this bigger than Habs/Bruins? Ducks/Kings? Hawks/Blues?

Long story short - it doesn't matter that much.

As a Ranger fan, this is not that big of a game. A good game but please, we are still in January for goodness sake.

I think this is another case of Islander fans tooting their own horns again....best forward, best offense, best depth, unreal goalie, best young players in the league, loudest arena...

I have also never seen the "AIAEC" acronym used as often then by Isle fans this year. Every thread has some bombastic statement followed by "AIAEC..."

I was looking forward to them getting good again but I am growing weary of the antagonism already...

Since when has the Islanders arena been loud and rabid?

It has always been loud and rabid when the team is good. And even when they sucked, it has always rocked when they play the Rangers. Honestly, you wouldn't believe how loud that place gets when it's filled.
