Confirmed with Link: Rangers hire Mike Sullivan to

Sullivan was selected by the Rangers in the fourth round (No. 69 overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft.

The left-handed shooting center never suited up for New York, though, instead completing his full four seasons at Boston University (the same college as Blueshirts team president Chris Drury) before becoming a free agent and signing with the San Jose Sharks in 1990. He went on to play 11 seasons in the NHL for the Sharks, Flames, Bruins and Coyotes.

Goaltending doesn’t win. Especially if your roster (and forward talent) is substandard as ours is compared to real competitors.

Thats why paying him was stupid. His presence here isn’t an obstacle to winning. His contract however is an obstacle to us acquiring the necessary talent at positions that demonstrably matter more than his position.

What player are the Rangers signing for 4-5 million dollars that makes this team a competitor?

The Rangers finally got their man. They just need major changes in personnel. I was listening to Ray Ferraro on the Ray and Dregs pod. Ferraro was saying Sullivan employs a straight and direct style. He pointed out there are forwards on the Rangers who don't like to play that way and he mentioned Panarin and Zibanejad. As Larry Brooks mentioned on the pod, this player group is not firing Sullivan in two years. Should be fun.

Was this posted yet?

I think Brooks said Drury's extension is only 2 years? 😲 at 3:00

I heard that. How many years were remaining on the original contract? That's the key. It it was a five year contract, Drury would have had one year remaining prior to the two year extension. One thing is clear, Sullivan will be Drury's last coaching hire in NY if the Rangers don't get it right with Chris in charge.

Wonder how this effects the clubs decision with #20 now? Most reports we high on the probability of Kreider being moved in the offseason. Now that Sullivan is on board does that change things? Those two are buddies. Sullivan likes to give big icetime to his vets.
Been wondering about this too. I don’t think Kreider can remain on the rangers as a third line/special teams guy. Which is what he is at this point in his career. Same with Mika. Ideally both of those guys need a fresh start elsewhere. At least one of them has to move on.

I mean, yes, he's overpaid for sure.

But then I look at a guy like Hellebuyck with multiple Vezinas, Hart trophy nominations, etc... and the guy can't stop a beach ball in the playoffs.

That makes me feel a little better.

As for "acquiring the necessary talent" - that's pretty difficult. Elite core centers typically aren't available and, when they are, are either over the hill or cost half a team to acquire.

I keep seeing McDavid and Eichel being UFA's next year blah blah blah - when was the last time a truly, truly elite center in the vein of the aforementioned two hit free agency?

You know I'm with you on goalies, but what series did he lose?

We haven't outplayed a team in the playoffs since maybe 2015 and the last time we were like, obviously the better team was the 2014 ECF.

Carolina in 2024 is the only series during Igor's career where we've even been close to keeping up with our opponent.

Washington? And people act like he's clutch and yet completely disregard that he was a huge reason we missed the playoffs this year.

The only series in my book that he was super amazing were Tampa in 2022 and Florida in 2024 and even then he gave up soft goals and ultimately lost. Maybe Carolina in 2022 but they scored a ton for him.

I disagree. All of these moves have been planned. Maybe they were done in short notice, but the players were told that they had one last shot to get their shit together. They didn't, and Drury started shipping these guys out.
You reference point is actually before the start of 2023-2024 season and Laviolette joining the team. They had a great run in the first year but even so the obvious deadweight was easily identified and the first stage of the purge have began (Trouba, Lindgren, Goodrow, Chytil, Kakko). Then insurrection started and Laviolette lost the team. The above have been permanently replaced with additions of JTM, Borgen, Carrick, youngsters coming up and more moves to come this offseason. The recent Rangers teams showed there will be a first year new coach effect.

But why bid against ourselves so early & overpay him? Especially when his market would be extremely limited if he wanted to go to a contender.
No reason to play with fire. And maybe is he overpaid a bit, but by how much? A million? That’s peanuts. At least we know we have a big game goalie when we are back in the playoffs…unlike the Jets.

Vince didn’t do his research. Sullivan was part of the Espo disaster that sent Mark Tinordi to the North Stars for Brian Lawton and scraps. He signed with the Sharks three years later in 1991

Vince is now reporting that Torts could still join Sullivan behind the bench?
Emily Kaplan already said it’s not happening. I get that Drury wants to shift the #HOCKEYCULTURE narrative, but just reliving the Hank era because the Rangers haven’t figured out how to defend the neutral zone or play fast hockey in a decade is a bad idea.

That's what she said about me. She turned me down initially for a date, and look at me now. She joined me after all.

Drury better phone Tampa about Howard. He fills a need ,RW depth and doubt he'll cost much since Bolts announced that they won't sign him. Not much value after announcing that

Also, even if you're huffing the copium that all this team needs to do to contend is get rid of two top six forwards because you don't like the vibes, it's borderline unrealistic that Drury 1) can do that or 2) wants to.

He's doubling down. He's doing it right in front of you. He wants to win the Cup 13 months from now. He's not shipping out multiple top six players.

Yeah, it’s interesting because i don’t think what needs to be done aligns with what will be done.

there’s been a ton of chatter that the team needs to get of Kreider, Mika, Panarin. Which is fine. But I have a hard time believing that Mike Sullivan signed up to have Drury trade away all these core pieces, and no clear path to replacing them.

Like Sullivan left the Pens because he didn’t want to deal with the rebuild (or whatever term you want to use) that Dubas is going to do.
Exactly this! Well said, both of you.

The peanut gallery believing in some kind of "purge" is up for a rude awakening.

You think Sullivan is coming to coach a team with Vinny as 2C?

Sullivan is going to use JT and Mika as his new version of Sid and Malkin.

The salt will flow on opening night.

I wouldnt call a player who almost went PPG in the 2nd half of the season and ended up 2nd on the team in scoring a "third line/special teams guy".

Running backs are right down there with goaltenders.
They are reliant on other factors.

But you get an elite running back with a great line, you become a force.

You get a good defense with an elite goalie, you become a force.

Problem is I don’t see Sullivans team playing great defense lately. In theory it’s why I liked torts with the caveat that he was hands off on special teams

I think this 5 year deal is telling the world we need some significant roster changes and Sully is not going to take the blame for them. I'm not in the locker room so I can not say if there were real issues in there as have been rumored. If there are guys that were a problem in the locker room I would be very surprised if the organization is willing to keep them around for another season. It just would not make sense imo. Not saying they could not do well in other places but how can you take a chance on them causing problems again?
