Confirmed with Link: Rangers hire Mike Sullivan to

My goodness the way certain Rangers bloggers on Twitter are talking about Sullivan like he is on par with Cooper lol. Sullivan is an upgrade over Laviolette, but I’m not convinced he’s gonna dramatically change things either. At best, the Rangers will be what they were under Torts, good team that battles hard, but don’t have the talent or depth to win overall.

well cooper and sullivan have won the same number of cups and sullivan did it without the benefit of pandemic screwed seasons

at any rate in the end I'll just wait and see how he approaches things and what the roster looks like come september. until then it's guesswork

I mean...don't you want to know what happened in Pittsburgh? They haven't made it past the first round since 2016-17. They've been shitty the last few years. I would imagine that even if you don't believe in interviews that that is something you'd like to hear Sullivan explain.

It's kind of like an acting audition. You wouldn't audition DiCaprio or Pitt because you know what you're gonna get, but if they were in flop after flop after flop, you'd at least want to "inspect the goods", so to speak
More along the lines of

"If you were coaching the NYR right now, what would you do differently?

If you had some say in the roster changes, what would you be hopeful for?

What type of system would you implement for all zones & situations?

Who'd you like as your assistant coaching staff?"

Probably "Where are you going to keep this GIANT bag of money we hand you?"

Don’t like dimissing the pandemic affected seasons against Cooper and the Bolts. They get full marks winning in those environments, we saw certain teams wilt under that circumstances. Besides they proved it wasn’t just that getting to the SCF in 2022.

I expect the Rangers to be a playoff team no matter what the roster is, but after that I expect much the same since 2011 with this franchise. Sullivan isn’t changing or overcoming the bigger problems in management imo

All fair questions to ask in an interview

Did they not interview him? I mustve missed that.

Wasn't reported. But @Gardner McKay said:

"I think A is not. You have no idea how thorough of a search they conducted. You are using the absence of information (which has not been abundant with the rangers for some time) to further criticize Drury. Which, I want Drury gone. But I think this is a stretch."

How thorough of a search could it have been if there was no formal interview with anyone?

The possibility ended of a thorough search when he became available. But honestly, it's not a big deal. I put it this way in another conversation. Drury was looking for the coach that checked all of his boxes. Sullivan does. When he wasn't available, the search was going to be for someone who checks all those same boxes. If you have someone who already does, why look for a second option that also does? There isn't a reason to wait. Last coaching search, no one did, which is why it took a month to hire Laviolette even though they interviewed him early on.

The lack of a thorough search is fine. What I question isn't that. It's whether said boxes that Drury is looking at are the right boxes.

Agreed. Rangers went with a fresh and outside the box name with Quinn, it failed. They went with a retread in Gallant, it failed. They had an exhaustive search after the devils playoff loss and settled on Laviolette, it failed. Sullivan is a top tier coach but its going to come down to the roster.

It's whatever, what coach was coming here with this limp chumpy roster and turning the pumpkin into a carriage? Coach is 90% a non-factor especially when your team is aging, bereft of any real game-breaking talent and has no franchise prospects who can drag the cry-baby veteran anchors to wins. I don't see any path to this team being better next season. Unless Drury can trade all of the malcontents who hate him because he was a big meany to their fwends and replace them in kind. Mission impossible. IT STINKS!

I see this as mission probable, not impossible.
