Basically

If we jabronis are calling this retread, lazy, uninspired hiring, imagine what the players are thinking right now or even texting each other in their group chat.
Panarin: "Another pushover who will come in & try to implement a new system while I continue to do my thing"

Mika: "I wonder if I have to practice the weekend of EDC in Vegas"

JTM: "I hope he likes Funyons"

I'm not upset per se about the hire. Of the coaches currently available, I think he's the safest choice by far and I could actually see a scenario where the team buys into his message and plays well, at least for a few years.

But here are my issues:

A) There wasn't a thorough search. Drury has had wood for Sullivan for years and rushing to sign him up is equivalent to blowing your load. This shows a complete lack of creativity on Drury's part.

B) Sullivan is going to be the highest paid HC? Ummm, why? Based on what? What has he done to deserve that? He's not the best head coach in the NHL. The guy hasn't made it past the first round since 2016-2017. And look, it's not my money and it's not like it counts against the salary cap. But the idea that Dolan would not be outbid for Mike Sullivan? Like he's Scotty Bowman in his prime? Again, the guy hasn't made it past the first round since 2016-2017 while having three players who are well on their way to the Hall of Fame.

C) This team needs a minor rebuilding and despite my feelings on Drury, I don't think Sullivan is the right to revitalize the careers of guys like Laf and K'Andre Miller, and help develop guys like Othmann, Berard, Perreault, etc.

So IDK, this feels like it could be more of the same. We'll make the playoffs thanks to Igor, won't make it to the SC, the young guys won't develop properly, rinse, and repeat.
I think B and C are legitimate concerns.

I think A is not. You have no idea how thorough of a search they conducted. You are using the absence of information (which has not been abundant with the rangers for some time) to further criticize Drury. Which, I want Drury gone. But I think this is a stretch.

My disappointment is that the last time Sullivan coached a meaningful game with a star roster, he basically benched Adam Fox for Brock Faber and the 'best USA team ever' couldn't put 3 past Jordan Binnington.

Sullivan isn't going to come in here and institute a forecheck. Quinn wanted N-S forechecking. What was it? Relentless? Gallant wanted the same thing. That's how his Golden Knights played. Laviolette said the same thing.

Sullivan will get here, see he's got a roster of forwards who can't skate, defensemen who can't pass, the components of a good PP and good goaltending. What's he going to do? Show a bunch of Carl Hagelin highlights and suddenly the team will play his hockey and win?

He'll sit the faster energetic kids for the more conservative, efficient veterans. Live and die by special teams and goaltending. and generally caveman it up.

With respect to whatever terrible management did to dismantle Pittsburgh, why did this need to be an immediate hire?

I think the benefits of a good vs great coach are minimal. I think the negative impacts of a good coach to a mediocre coach are substantial.

Lock up a good coach.

You can count on acquisition of one or two former Penguins. It's just the Rangers way to bring in some coach favorites.
Fair. Every coach does that. They all have a guy. Sometimes it is great. Sometimes you get Tanner Glass.

With the group of fat cats we have, there's really no other option than these recycled old guys that have had success before. A college coach wouldn't stand a chance. A guy like Torts would kill KAM and/or Laf. So we are stuck with this type of guy. I get that the real solution is to get rid of some of these uncoachable guys but is that realistic?

It's whatever, what coach was coming here with this limp chumpy roster and turning the pumpkin into a carriage? Coach is 90% a non-factor especially when your team is aging, bereft of any real game-breaking talent and has no franchise prospects who can drag the cry-baby veteran anchors to wins. I don't see any path to this team being better next season. Unless Drury can trade all of the malcontents who hate him because he was a big meany to their fwends and replace them in kind. Mission impossible. IT STINKS!

Is it? Who have they interviewed?

I think the biggest bummer about this hire is, even if you gave Chris Drury the benefit of the doubt for every single move he's made thus far....

You now know that in any circumstance, no matter what, he will make the safest decision possible. In comparison, Jeff Gorton had the foresight to dismantle a team past its prime, even if the execution was flawed.

I don't think we'll see another GM given that level of trust and freedom in Dolan's lifetime.
Because trading away the (in the room) well liked team captain mid season is a very safe thing to do, as we saw. Zero effect on the team.

It is not the X and O's. Its the Tims and Joes.

This NYR situation reminds me of a line from the classic movie Days Of Thunder. Tim (the racing team owner) tells Harry he needs him to build a car. That Harry can teach his driver how to drive. Harry tells Tim, take a look at that hound dog. That is the best damn dog I have ever had or seen and I did not teach him a damn thing.

I will wait and see with Sully. I'm not down on Sully. The question for me is not about Sully. The question for me is can Drury get Sully the dogs he needs to win the race.

if the hire was a Carberry-type, I'd have been fine with it
but i like this, especially if Torts is also back there

it has a feel of "unfinished business", they both won Cups elsewhere, but not when they were here together

despite our disappointment this season, this is IMHO (i know some disagree) still
a talented, deep and balanced roster, with Fox/Shesty at their peaks, a handful of not-old-yet all-star,s along with decent role players and emerging youth

Drury want to win, Sully and Torts too,
i am excited for these next few seasons
