Confirmed with Link: Rangers hire Mike Sullivan to

I like his system, at least we aren’t going to just sit back in a 1-3-1 in the neutral zone lol. But right now the rangers don’t have the personnel to maximize success with how Sullivan wants to play and limited flexibility to make changes to the roster. It’s going to be a tough first year unless there are some unexpected moves.

Just having an emphasis on forechecking is a breath of fresh air

Pros
- Isn't afraid to ride his horses
- He (and Jacques Martin) got the most out of a pedestrian defense, especially without Kris Letang.
- Shesterkin/Quick is the best tandem he's had since Fleury/Murray in 2016-17.

Cons
- Doesn't adjust
- Might as well send guys to Hartford if they aren't his type of player. You can argue the Pens didn't have many skilled players come up, but Sullivan defers to guys who work hard and play a north/south game.

Systems wise, he's similar to Lavy. Expect the Rangers to push the pace, execute quick passes, have dmen join the attack, and the skaters to play a five-man forecheck (weak side pinch). He'll dial it back a bit depending on the situation, but that's pretty much it.

Right now I don't really care what kind of system he runs. Like @DanielBrassard said, pieces need to be in place to execute a system. The vets are uncoachable and need to be trashed before any meaningful change can occur. If that doesn't happen, I can see Sullivan losing out to these vets like all the grizzled vet coaches before him.

At this point, I honestly have no opinion. I have no idea if Sullivan will be good or if some other coach would have been better (or worse).

If he succeeds, great. If he sucks, both he and Drury will be fired, and then we can start over with two more guys who probably won't be substantially different.

I like the Sullivan hire, but I wont be happy if they make no changes and just think a new voice will fix things. The purge isnt done and this hasnt changed my thinking. But as far as the cultural issues with the team, it was important to bring in a real CEO type, not Gallant who blew his nose with his tie and Laviolette who was afraid to enter the locker room and checked out like the vets at the first sign of adversity.. Sullivan is hands on and demanding of his players. He was Crosby's guy. That matters to me. He hung on a long time with shit rosters and the leagues worst goaltending because he had Sid's respect.
Like every other coach, he needs talent to win. He couldn't even make the playoffs with Cindy & Malkin as his 1-2 punch. We barely have more high end talent than the Pens currently do.

From what I've read, he's going to do what any coach would do & rely on his vets. I'll change my tune if he holds Panarin accountable when he's blindly throwing away pucks. Or stops sending Mika over the boards when he's passing up a shot on a breakaway.

I dont think those guys are going to be here much longer. Its also a bit naive to think David Carle or some flavor of the week AHL HC was going to come in and bench those guys either.

I think the biggest bummer about this hire is, even if you gave Chris Drury the benefit of the doubt for every single move he's made thus far....

You now know that in any circumstance, no matter what, he will make the safest decision possible. In comparison, Jeff Gorton had the foresight to dismantle a team past its prime, even if the execution was flawed.

I don't think we'll see another GM given that level of trust and freedom in Dolan's lifetime.

I agree, which is why I'm not beside myself with the hire, I'm just "whatever" about it. Nothing matters until the toxic core is gutted from this roster.

Fortunately for Sullivan and the Rangers a lot of their younger players/prospects do fit that mould. Guys like Brett Berard, Adam Edstrom, Cuylle, even Rempe. The problem is the high-end forwards don’t, which is the issue. That just forwards, on D it’s a f***ing mess. I do have to pick your brain on something, would you say Sullivan is willing to play a smaller D like Zac Jones who is a good puckmover but has some flaws trying to defend off the cycle or would he lean towards a guy like Urho Vaakanainen or Carson Soucy who is bigger but aren’t adept at making plays coming out of their own end.

This. It's institutionalized, like absorbed into the fibers. They're not gonna change at this point. They will just aim to outlast Sullivan like they outlasted those before him. Sully will age like a president. Check out the pics of Gallant and Lavi when they were hired and fired.

Gorton dismantled the team before he even fired Vigneault lol. Some foresight he had. Zucc, McDonagh and JT Miller all continued to be excellent players for years after Gortons ill fated teardown. Thankfully he replaced them with winners like Panarin & trouba. Whoops.

Looking back at those moves really leaves one warm & fuzzy. Sigh.

This is a huge pro IMO.
