It seems like the honeymoon phase for Gallant is coming to an end.
His pressers aren’t as cordial and he is beginning to criticize the team more publicly.
After a few bad performances I was a little surprised how positive he was after games, but I think he understood this team had a challenging schedule with a lot of real travel to start the season. So he gave them some rope.
But giving up big leads is eating at him and he continues to mention that he wants this team to play more of a “man’s game”.
I think he is realizing he is facing the same challenges that Quinn faced with the core of this team.
He’s got a little faux stash going too. Hoping he will grow that shit out to full grizzly mode and impart that attitude into the team.
I will say this - the Rangers have a lot of skill
in key positions and are finding ways to win, despite failing to play a full 60 and relying on their goaltender too much.
If he can find a way to break this team and get them to buy into a proper, consistent brand of hockey (which will require some stars at the top of the lineup to change their bad habits), and push the right buttons to help accelerate the development of some younger players, we can actually see something special happen here.
We will see how good of a coach he really is, because it won’t be an easy task
